I too sold all of my CD players years ago. Got Rid of 1200s too. I did keep my first Denon 1000. I guess CDs would play in my Pioneer DVJX1s if I lost my mind. I believe most are using media players if they have decks and are playing mp3s & mp4s. Since all of my new stuff is all straight digital downloads I cant see dealing with CDs unless what you play doesn't change. My new car didn't even come with a CD player. Bluetooth & USB covers getting music into the system and works so well I'm dropping XM

For mobile gigs, I'm typically using a Pioneer DDJ-SZ2.

For club gigs, I use CDJs and Turntables interchangeably. Preferred mixer is an S9, but I can work off the more commonly found Pioneer DJM-900 Nexus as well when they have one in house.

And I just played a set on the Rane 12 and the new 72 mixer. I could use those 12s again... but honestly, I hated the 72 mixer. I didn't like the LED set up at all. The contrast on the knobs is HORRIBLE (which I could admittedly change the knobs out if I actually owned one). The built in effects sound much worse than the ones on the S9... The screen is kind of cool, but I found it more distracting than helpful during my set.

In short... I can basically DJ on anything. But if you give me a preference, I'd have an SZ or an S9 at all times.

I'm happy you can. I can't. I like the controller or CD player to have free moving wheels instead of the stationary ones. Also must where I can freely hear what I'm mixing. Instead of the Numark 25. When you try to setup a song all you hear is stuttering.

used many cd units thru the years....stuck mainly with Denon units when the turntable/tabletop stuff hit... now i use a pioneer rx2 because im not a fan of laptops ....if i ever decide to get a nice laptop id probably buy a nice pioneer controller for it as a back up for the rx2... hope it stays reliable tho... its been amazing so far

I've been using a DenonDJ DN-HD2500 for that past 8 years. I never liked the idea of DJing with a laptop. I like the "all in one"
concept. I do have the DN4500 CD player with it to in case a CD is needed played.

I've decided to stick with wax cylinders .. can't trust that newfangled technology.

You have to do it the way you feel comfortable. That said, 'all in one' technology is just as prone to failure - except .. more pieces fail. Instead of one piece going down, you have several.

As for not liking the idea of using a laptop, my advice - bring one with you to your events and connect it as a secondary device, a backup if you will - or extra players (instead of 2, now you have 4). I'm willing to bet that within several events, you'll find yourself using the laptop more than anything else.

Myself I used to say I would never become a computer DJ. Today for me it's the only way to go. Controller and laptop together with a portable 2TB HD and back up. I thought it would be too hard finding songs. It's really easy. Besides no carrying CD books anymore. Both HDs fit into the laptop bag.

I used that player for a year or two. I used to hate it's search function and how you had to hook everything up... but for playing music, it was a nice mid-point between a CD player set up, and a laptop.

But I definitely don't miss those tiny little jog wheels.

Spotify, and Djay Pro on a single laptop with WiFi access is all you need for success these days. No controller is necessary. Just another interface that nobody but the DJ cares about (and it's one more thing you bring in and out)

Say that's all you need. Someone else may be lost and not even know how to use what you're talking about or be good at it. Ittigger said it best, it's about what you're comfortable with.

I get what you're saying. To become a DJ that's basically all you need besides speakers.

I don't use CD's but I still have my dual CD deck. (in storage)
I use a Numark D2 Director dual MP3 player.
I'm not much of a mix-master....so it works just fine for what I need.

I bet it works well on an iPad too ..

:) It does. I just edited this post on my iPad. And now my iPhone.

Mix, see the pic. On the iPhone, at least, there are these dots. Click that and you get the edit optionDAE734B5-8F7F-494C-BBF7-5A88399F966B.jpeg11536E3C-BFB3-4CBD-81FE-0191F4871726.jpeg

Mix apparently has the opposite reaction to an Apple product, or a Yankees game, or an uneventful event ...

Steve I get you're a Yankees fan and like the IPAD. Me I say screw both of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do care about my controller, because it makes my life easier. Scrolling through wave-forms and beat matching with a keyboard/mouse is a PIA.
This is a picture of a guys rig who specializes in Tango music. Even he uses a controller (DJ2GO sitting on the Macbook over the touchpad), and it's not to impress people.

The all tube EQ/compressor/soundcard (except for the D/A converter), sitting in the box on the right, cost almost as much as some cars.
