You can be prepared before you book an event!
Please explain how you do that? What if it's something they want that you don't? How do you prepare for that if you haven't booked the event knowing what they expect you to provide? I sent an email and got a call yesterday about doing an event this Saturday. I didn't get to see the voicemail and listen to it till this morning. Sometimes I forget to put my phone on ringer after it's been on vibrate.

This one if we get it should be simple. The event is for a hiking thing in Hacketstown, NJ. They will need you to bring a mic to make anouncments and play background music. The event is from 7:30 AM to 8 PM. I didn't get an answer. I will call them later today to see if I get an answer.

I don't plan for make believe events.
I did mic & background music back when I was 14 years old.
Forget phone calls & voice mail??
You must be very busy.

Like I said I had my phone on vibrate and that's why I didn't hear the call. Just got the call a little while ago and I answered it. May not be able to do it because I was told they want mostly Country Music and we don't have it. I was told they will give a list of the songs they want. Now if I can get the list from them tonight maybe we can get the stuff by tomorrow. Any suggestions for Country Western Music that you know will work? If not we will just have to pass up on the event.

That would be a tough one.
I have several crates of country to pull from.
Most people don't really know country & western music.
Not my favorite but, I have pulled it off.

I just wanted to be honest and also even if we can't do it if we get that list we can work on getting those songs for in the future. To tell the truth this is the first time anybody has talked to me in all my 34 years of DJing about providing Country Music for an event.

The money wasn't an issue. To be honest I was told that the music was to be mostly Country Music and we don't have Country Music. I was sent an email about the details of the event and a list of songs for the event. The list was not long enough for an event lasting 12 hours with most of the music being Country Music. I wanted to do the event to get away from the type of events we've done to explore a new kind of clientell looking to move in another direction. I just sent him a text message declining to do the event.

Now what I want to do is get a bunch of Country Music so that in the future we can do an event where the client wants some Country Music. Please keep in mind this is the first time I ever ran across a client wanting us to provide Country Music for their event. Please can I get some help for in the future if this happens again. Anybody here know where I can get such music that will work for an event where they want Country Music? What's hot new and old. One song I definately want for my personal self is Don Mcclean American Pie. I can play it on You tube but I want it on my HD's. I love that song! I'm not a fan of Country music but if a client wants it and the price is right then they get it. We just need to have it.

Buy the music!
Amazon works.
Google top country & western hits.
You will play country& western for maybe 45 min. And then you will be asked to play some music we can dance too

I can probably help post the list give me an idea of what they asked for and we can go from there

I was going by what the client told me and how do you know they won't dance to that kind of music? I could have done what you suggested but what if it's not what the client wanted? I turned the event down and here's the reasons why. I told him we don't have that style of music. He told me they would have it for us to use on a phone and all we had to do was play the music and be the host. Originally I was told they have a list for us to go by. Now I'm an Ebay fan. Now what if we went online and got Country Music and it's stuff not on their list? When a client gives you a list of songs they want and you agree to do the event, they are expecting you to have those songs. If you don't have them then you look bad and the client is upset. At first I was told his daughter was going to get the music. When I talked to him later his boss was going to see to it. I don't like having a client supply us the music for an event. I would rather we have it ourselves. No problem a client giving us a list and we get the music needed. I have never had a client had a client provide us with the music they wanted for their event other then a specific song for a specific thing during the event. The thing that had me say no to doing the event is when I asked how we were to get paid, I was told his boss would write us a check. I would never take a check the day of the event unless I knew the client personally and have done events for them in the past that I never had an issue with getting paid the full amount. I only talked to this person over the phone. I don't know who this person is and how do I know if that check wouldn't bounce from here to Florida?

The other big thing is even if we were given the music we wouldn't know what to play when. We don't know that music.

I won't speak about being prepared with the right music or not... I too would probably not take an event with music that is out of my comfort zone for that extended period of time. However, if it was to be provided by an outside source for the entire period of time... then essentially im a PA rental, and that's a different story.

The reason I did post a reply is because you seem to have a tendency to worry about how you'd get paid, especially with checks. Word of advice... you can always ask for certified checks if you're not comfortable with personal checks. I get them all the time for on the day payments.

I didn't think of a certified check. Still this is short notice where I didn't get much info about the event and not much feel for the person I was talking to.

Wow...always a soap opera with you. For once, I'd love to see (as in video) and hear you tell us about an event that you rocked BY YOURSELF (as in NO PARTNER) with NO DRAMA. Hey, I can dream can't I?:sqlaugh:

Please tell me what drama? I saw this ad on Craigslist and answered the ad by email. As it turned out we don't have the music they wanted for this event. So I decided feeling uncomfortable about doing the event because of this and even if we had the music we wouldn't have known what to play when. Now we were given say 2 weeks then it wouldn't have been a problem getting the music they wanted because I would have done what others have done on here and ask for ideas/help. This event was last minute and we didn't feel comfortable about doing the event since we don't have a clue about Country Music to not do it so it didn't hurt our business moving forward and us doing a bad job at this event.

Now this what I mean when I say a thing about finding oyt about the details for an event and not feeling comfortable about doing the event. When in doubt just simply pass. No need of just taking on an event to make some money and risk ruining the event for the client and their guest. Those who take a gig without being qualified to do the event just to make some money are called gig whores.

Now I heard what Taso said. How many on here have accepted a cashiers check the day of an event that they don't know the person and never did an event for them?
