Bose L1 Model ii vs RCF Evox 8...which system can handle larger events effectively?

I'm not getting any younger.
I'm with you there! I'm 64 with lots of energy, but lugging heavy speakers, and especially hoisting them up on poles or tripods is not going to ever happen again in my world. I may buy a 3rd J8 or a sub for larger events, but as few of them as I get I may just rent an extra sub when I need one. Almost all of the weddings I do are under 200 people and I think a pair of the J8s will be fine. Tomorrow's wedding is in a large venue so we'll see! Did you meet Kyle in Edison?

Not sure of the guys name, but I'll look for my paperwork. Nevertheless, it was a sight to see...single Evox 8 and Evox 12 set up between the isles. LOL Wasn't a great for sound. I knew I wanted at least the Evox 8 before I visited the warehouse in Edison, NJ. My biggest concern was small loading packing footprint. I wasn't impressed with the Evox 12 because the poles didn't fit in the same bag. Needed a second bag. The top and bottom combined in the bag was pretty heavy. And, the specially designed storage cabinet wouldn't have been able to hold both in the same cube. But, I could adapt the other side of the storage cabinet for the second Evox 12, but still had to find a place for the poles. BTY I'm 12 years older, so you see why the concern for weight. I'm also a single operator.

GOD Bless you! I hope to be still DJing when I'm your age. I wasn't impressed enough with the Evox 12, its weight and the extra thousands of dollars to go that route. The combination of small, light, powerful, and dependable works for me. Tomorrow will be a great test. I'm thinking I can have my entire system set up and sound checked in 15-20 minutes. I'm gonna be playing a lot of Latin music, so I'm sure there will be lots of dancing and I'll get a good chance the give the J8s a good run.

I live in Florida, so I couldn't stay single operator and still survive. I tried hat the couple years and the summers were really tough. Our wedding season dies here the weekend after the 4th of July until about the end of September, with the exception of the stray destination weddings for people that don't know better than to come to Florida in the dead of summer and a few birthday parties. Not enough gigs to pay a mortgage, car payment, and keep myself busy. We just did a 5,000 mile road trip to do 6 weddings and a COL. We leave Tuesday for our last road trip until next summer. This one's only 3 weddings in 2 weeks and I get to spend most of a week with my 92 year old dad.

We both understand now why weight is such an issue. I'm very critical of quality sound. My first system after ditching hi-fi equipment was with Active speakers, i.e. RCF Art200 and Art800 (top and bottom). I held out as long as I could before converting to digital/laptop use. It is true, "you can teach an old dog new tricks." I'm also here in Florida, Melbourne. It was just before I moved to Florida that I forced myself to downsize from Yorkville Tops and Subs to the Evox system. I hated to sell off the NX750Ps and LS801P (18" sub) and most of my lighting equipment. You hit the nail on the head in a prior post, "if I need more low end I'll rent a sub."

P.S. Would like to see your Latin playlist should you choose to share. You can PM or post on forum.

I've had no experience with the other systems, but my model 2's, and now the pro 32's have served me well. Pro 16's too

Yes, we should make time to meet and talk about those aches and pains that seem to appear a day after each event.

Whichever system works for each of us is a great system. That being said I really enjoy doing lots of research and then going to a GC and doing several head to head tests. My recent upgrade from QSC to RCF has me wondering why I didn't make that move before now. I guess we weren't doing long enough travel gigs for me to see the need for a smaller, yet powerful system. The RCF Evox J8s destroyed most of the column array systems in head to heads and also the QSC K12.2s I've been using. The only systems that were close were all a LOT more money without enough extra juice to justify the added cost.

That being said, anybody using the new JBL PRX Ones for weddings out there?

You said a very interesting thing. I too was hung up on sticking with using CD's to DJ with and a setup for that. My partner pushed me in that direction and I haven't looked back since I became a computer DJ. I talked my friend who is 71 into becoming a computer DJ. He was hesitant until he listened to me and tried it out. Now he's hooked. I have a partner that helps with things I can't do like putting the Yamaha DSR 115 speakers on poles and moving those Yorkville 801P subs. He's 10 years younger then me.

Hi Scott,

I know you have been using BOSE for a fairly long time and respect your opinions on the equipment. I actually just purchased the Pro 32 and only bought one side. I did a small wedding on Saturday night and the system sounded great, but I am so used to using a speaker each side, it just sounded like something was missing! The new Pro 32 has plenty of power and low end for sure with the new B2 Bass module. I was thinking about also buying the Pro 16 and using it on the other side. Does this sound like a viable option?

I've now done 3 weddings with a pair of J8's. All 3 were in large rooms, and 1 had over 150 guests. For dinner music with the volume at less than 1 they fill the room with crystal clear sound that could also be heard in the hallway through closed doors. During the dance portion I have yet to turn them up half way and it was plenty loud with good thump. Here is my setup at one of the weddings, and my entire system on my cart ready to roll in. Setup is about 20 minutes including sound check. The unit in the bottom left corner is a Denon Commander Sport. It's a rechargeable 150 watt RMS system that I use for ceremonies. I have used it for as many as 170 people so far.

Clean , nice setup
Don't need more speakers but love the look.
I'll put that on the want not need list.
(Bucket list)
Thinking of using a flat bottom light stand so as to help prevent trip hazard.
Sometimes, if I have space & ceiling I put the light tree behind the table.
Using the same rock and roller for years
Have extended & fully loaded for prom
A couple of times. A little too much for the front casters!

Mine is an 800 pound load dolly/cart from Home Depot that I customized. I added no-flat tires to the rear, RocknRoller 3" wide no-flat tires to the front, and a piece of plywood covered in rat fur for the deck. I have about $200 into the cart.

I put my speakers side by side in the back seat, my hard cases sideways on the end and on top of my portable, then the cart upside down on top. My Phitz cable bag then fits snugly on top of the cart behind the river's seat after everything else is loaded. My tripod and sub poles fit behind the seat and my lights fit right behind the back seat. We are currently on a 2 week 3 wedding road trip and everything fits perfectly, I can even have my driver's seat all the way back and the passenger seat can still recline for naps!

Michael, what is below the covered space on which your laptop sits? Nice clean setup. Got to meet up in the near future for a show-n-tell re: equipment. Let me know when you are going to be in my area again, coffee, lunch. For the next 3 to 4 weeks I am bowling on Mon-Tue afternoons and Wed evening. See PM.

That's my 2 hard cases with a piece of material on them. It brings the laptop up to the perfect height where I don't have to bend over to type.

Great use of props! Do you use any type of stool or stand the entire event?

I guess you could, but I believe it would take a lot of work to get both of them balanced. I personally wouldn't do it. We've done several hundred events with l1's and a significant number of those have been with 1. I have 2 of each, but if I could only get 2 total, I'd pick one or the other. I'd probably go with 2 pro16s than 1 of each. But I also feel the sub 1's are more than enough bass for the events I do. The sub on the pro16 seems similar to the sub1.

Maybe it's because I've been listening to them a while, but when you get out in the room, I really like getting a consistent sound regardless of which side of the room I'm on.

Thanks Scott!
I guess I have been playing gigs all my life with two speakers and just got used to the sound of both sides. I bought the Bose Pro 32 so I could cut some weight and number of speakers I had to carry. I must admit, the system sounds great! Lots of volume for sure and the bass is very deep. It is good to hear that you have done a lot of gigs over the years with just one unit, so that tells me that I just have to get used to the different sound and balance.
thanks again!
