How do you handle people coming up to you at an event you're doing asking how much do you charge?

.

I don’t recall you ever saying that an owner asked your opinion on things to help out. You have just always said that you had told them this or that, or they needed to do certain things to increase business.

That fact of the matter is that if you were as good as you say you are, and have a following, anyplace that you play at would/will be packed. The spot would be THROUGH THE FREAKING ROOF, just because The MixmasterMachoMan was on the set.
Let me say this. I remember the last bar/tavern I played in. Things were poorly run. The first night I played there should have told me to keep it moving. I wouldn't listen to my GF at the time.

My understanding was it was a Friday night and I was to play from 8pm to 1:30am. That didn't happen. Around 9:30 you had some DJs come in to setup to play. I knew nothing of this. So their time to play there was 10 to closing. I had no issues with those guys. I played till 11 and got paid. I was asked what my ideal was for a good time for me to play there. I said 6-10pm. That way the guys could come in and do what they do. I don't drink, so I knew nothing about happy hour. You never have a DJ interfere with happy hour.

The time for happy hour from Monday to Friday was 4-8pm. So I was cutting into their happy hour. That should have never happened. So I'm there starting to play there at 6 and happy hour ends at 8. So now the drink prices go back to the regular price. I'm there till 10 . The bar was poorly stocked. They didn't have what a lot of people who came there regularly like to drink. So with that by 9 I was playing to an almost empty room.

The reason for that was because at 10 the guys who came there to play were there playing for a bunch of youngsters. A lot of them were under age. The owner said nothing and the barmaid just served the drinks and took their money. The owner said nothing because all he cared about was that the place was making money.

So the people who came to see me play weren't going to stay there but so long because they didn't want to be there when the****** ******* come in. The music the DJs played for their crowd was mostly songs with swear words in them. The people who came to see me play didn't want to be in there even close to there time they were coming in there. At 10 it was $10 to get in.

So I was setup to fail and didn't know it. If I was given the time to play there from 8-1:30am for 2 months I would have had the place packed. The reason is because the place was right around the corner from the Private Place Lounge and people who heard me play there loved what I did when I got the call to come and play there. So once they found out I was playing there they would have passed the word and the place would have been packed.

That didn't happen and one night ABC came in the place and fined the owners for allowing under age people to come there and drink.

I finally switched to playing there on Sunday from 5-10. Long story short I came there to play on a Sunday like I normally do to find out the place was closed. It's a hair salon now. Nowhere do you hear anything about me telling any owner how to run their business.

It sounds like you were a customer, not a paid vendor or employee.
You're not "the DJ" if your "shift" is always before the "other DJs."

Here's our 'suggestion'. Find one of these bars, open it back up and use all of the 'suggestions' you have. Show us how successful you can be.

Steve it's not just about a simple price quote. It's about getting details to find out first if the event is something I want to do. That's number one on my list today. They can have the right money to pay and if I feel we're not right for the event or something I don't feel comfortable with doing I will pass.

Honestly....how many gig have you passed on in the past 5 years?

My top priority is safety first. I know some will disagree with that because they feel anything bad will happen at an event they are doing.

No, YOU are the only one who feels like that.

You can't control what every guest wears but I'm talking about those who feel ghetto wear is ok at an event. I'm talking guest wearing pants hanging off their butt showing their underwear and Timberland boots. We have done events like that in the past and just not interested in such events like that today.

So, when you're on the phone with a potential client...
do you ask them to find out what people will (or won't) be wearing?

What is the acceptable dress code for a handball court?

Sir I got to say this. They were given tons of suggestions/advice on what to do from 2 of my friends which one of them was a manager at The Private Place Lounge which my friend played in at for 27 years. Very successful place and run super well. It was run tight to the right. People used to love to come there and tons of people used to come there and tons of DJs wanted to play there. I was blind to be able to play there because of my friends help getting me to play in there.

Nothing I or my friend could do to help keep this other place open. Bob said a great thing. Crazy to have 2 different DJs playing in a place on the same night.

I knew what the other DJs who came there to do was going to turn into a big mess and it did. The owner was desperate for money and after I finished playing the owner allowed anything to come in the place. All he saw was money coming in the door. He didn't see the disaster to follow that both me and my friend knew was going to happen. Certainly it happened. A big situation happened I was told and those DJs were given a vacation till they could get better security and not the owner getting the security.

My time playing there they didn't have security because there was no need for it. The crowd I played for weren't the kind of crowd looking to start trouble. I just kept up with my time on Friday 6-10 and let him worry about the rest of the time. I could have said let me try things out and play from 8 till closing. I decided soon those other DJs would be back there again and I had no issues with them.

Ok Jeff. They were mostly under age people coming in to drink and the DJs playing music with a lot of curses in them. Now does that sound better.?

What if I used that same term to describe someone Mix? What if someone used the N word to describe someone here? I don't let anyone else use racist speak either. This isn't about you it's in the TOS you agreed to when you signed up here. Consider this a warning or if you'd like an official warning I can do that too. Either way for you or anyone else that uses a racist term here the next time is 30 days

I cleaned it up by saying under age people allowed in the place. When I first stated this I was asked how do I know they were under age? I been doing this long enough and seen this situation more than enough times to know what's going on and why.

I'm not spending a lot of time on this. I cleaned the thread and the quote up and you know not to do it again. I still don't believe that you know what the term you said means or you wouldn't have

He has used that term in the past, and was warned back then also. It was explained to him that it's a racist term. Either he's not listening. not caring about it, or is just not a smart guy.
