How do you handle people coming up to you at an event you're doing asking how much do you charge?

l'm asking this question because at times I've had people come up to me asking how much do you charge to do a certain kind of event? I find it awkward when working an event for a client. I try to keep my focus on the event I'm doing at the time for the client and their guests. Just wondering how others here have handled a situation like that? I understand they are giving you a compliment when they ask that question. That's just great.. I just don't know how to answer that question at an event I'm doing without getting more details from the person asking that question.

I simply tell them that every event is unique and would love to discuss it further with them if they want to reach out to me or I can reach out to them. If they ask, I further state that I don't have a blanket cost for every event but each one is different.

Here's my card, give me a call tomorrow, and I'd be happy to discuss your needs ...

Welp, the good news is you won't have to worry about that happening for a while.

BTW, there's 2 of you at this wedding (and most events) .. It would seem that ONE of you isn't at the controls at any one time, so this really shouldn't be an issue for you and your partner..

If it’s during a point in the night where I can have a quick conversation, I say typically my prices start at $2150, but the avg client spends around $3500 once factoring in options. Also certain times of the year have $2950 minimums. If you want a full catalog of all my options and pricing, visit my website and contact me there.

if I don’t have time to talk... fill out the contact form on my site and I’ll get you everything within 24hrs. Something like what you see here tonight is $$$$

Give them a card and have them call you the next day or you call them. I do far too many different types of events in 5+ different States to just quote a price. Usually if someone Absolutely has to have a price right away it isnt a good sign. Especially if they are asking while you are wotking

Great advice all. I love the one anout handing them a business card and saying call me tomorrow so I talk to you. If they are serious enough about you doing an event for them they will call within 2 days. Also another good idea is to ask can I call you and if so when? Don't act like you're desperate for work.

umm....typically I just answer the question. "our prices typically run from $1800-2500 depending on your specific needs. What type of event are you planning?...... Do you have a date?...... Great! Give me a call after the weekend and we can sure talk about it!"
Mix needs more time for that .. he has only had 8-10 years of this discussion on here and the other board to decide whether the starting point should be $350 or $300.

Like most, I'll hand them a card.
If I can spare a moment, I will chat with them.
I will also not commit to a specific price,
and I do try to stay away from "starting at" or "in the range of"

Steve it's not just about a simple price quote. It's about getting details to find out first if the event is something I want to do. That's number one on my list today. They can have the right money to pay and if I feel we're not right for the event or something I don't feel comfortable with doing I will pass.

Just price alone doesn't cut it with me anymore. My top priority is safety first. I know some will disagree with that because they feel anything bad will happen at an event they are doing. What I find when the amount of money a client is willing to pay a DJ is up there normally those people will book a decent venue to have their event in. It doesn't have to be top tier. Just decent and where most of the people attending the event will be dressed nicely. Those are some factors that are important to me besides money.
