OK, so I'm working on improving my marketing online, and so I created a YouTube channel with my DJ name. Up to now I've just posted videos to Facebook (no issues at all) and my personal youtube...only diff on the youtube is the biz one is under that name (iceburghdj) vs my own real name, and it's new.

SAME videos on both.

On the iceburghdj one a wedding highlights video was pulled down for copyright violation (the song Shout)...but the SAME EXACT video has been up for 3 years on my personal page...

And I see videos with copywritten songs ALL THE TIME on youtube...just google any song and you'll find folks that make slideshow, lyrics, etc and use the real music.

So...what is the deal?

How do you you promote yourself if you can't have songs on the audio??

Are you trying to monetize? I get copyright claims but they’re not taken down as long as I don’t try to monetize. Only once in did a video get marked for removal... to which I reuploded without the clip of the song that was in question

So lets drill that down a bit. What is your (or more importantly "their") definition of monetizing? Obviously, when we put up a video, we're advertising our services with the intent to get booked again and make more money. Are we selling the video? No. Are we selling the music in the video? No, but we are using the music and the video to advertise and make money. So where is the delineation?

I get copyright claims all the time on YouTube videos, but I don't have any of them set to be monetized. I have never had them take one down.

It looks like this:

Basically... the owner of the music has the right to choose what happens. They may simply choose to make money off your content. Or, they might choose to issue take down notices.

If the owner of Shout doesn't want it on the internet, they can force your video down. I'm sure it's possible to check the status before uploading, but I don't know how to do it.

I've always gotten very quick responses when YouTube's algo scans my videos for music, and it's been fine with everything I have uploaded.

When you upload a video, do you set it as not monetized?

Yep, exactly. I don't even try because I'm not trying to get enough views to make money on YouTube ads. For the non-copyrighted content, it's really an ad for my business anyway. So I don't want anyone to not watch because an ad starts running. If there is copyrighted music, I don't really have a choice because the owner of the copyright might run ads anyway.
