We got a surprise 50th birthday celebration to do for my best friends sister in law at Casa Del Sol in Union, NJ. Time is 8pm till midnight. I was asked to do this well over 6 months ago. This should be plenty of fun. Got to play a nice mixture of music. From house music to hip hop and R & b. I will be using my new facade and light stand. 4 hours is not a lot of time, so got to keep things moving. I hope to get some nice videos to help with promoting our business.

The good news is the venue allows vendors 2 hours to setup. That's more than enough time for us to get things setup with what we're using. Just got to do what I need to do for the event and my partner do his part.

The one issue with this event is the birthday ladies daughter is the one paying for this event and she is 28 years old. So she wants what she wants. Her aunt my best friends wife had to remind her she needed to invite some of her friends to the event and have some music for the older people to enjoy themselves at the event.. just got to practice patience.

The funny part is most of the music was house music. Very little of anything else.

Had to find out some bad news. My best friend couldn't make it. He had a mild stroke I was told. They say he's doing alright. I will check on him later today.

Yeah...funny coincidence that the evening was comprised of the only music you...as the dj... know about and play... OH THE IRONY!

Wrong again target breath. That's not the only music I know. I know others but not the crazy stuff some come up with. That stuff I don't understand what they are saying a lot of the times. It's funny that the young people know what they are saying.
 
So what was the catalyst for playing almost all house music? Was it the daughter who wanted it? was it the birthday woman? Was it reading the crowd? or was it your comfort zone?

Call it whatever you want. If you want to be a relevant DJ... you need to know more than just old house music.

I will make a gig report after this. I just have to say I was told that the daughter didn't want house music the whole time or most of the time. Get there and play a few other songs that are not house music and was told no to that. So went back to what the crowd wanted to party to and that worked. I said to my partner it is funny how much house music is working for this crowd. No it was not a lot of old house music. Most of it was up to date. It worked and everybody had a great time. I need to say this crowd has known me for a lot of years. I've been back now for 19 years and they have known me the whole time mostly. I myself was surprised we didn't play more hip hop and R & B then we did. The daughter saw what was working and didn't do a lot of complaining. Unlike some other clients. Some would have insisted in what they want and not think of the crowd and what they want.

The ONLY FREE gigs I do are for organizations like the Cancer Society or the Military... HOW DO YOU MAKE ANY MONEY by doing these free gigs?

My gigs pay my mortgage. They pay my kids college tuition.

The more you do free, the less you have.
