Disturbing the peace BS

There's a venue in my area (Rockfield Manor) that if you're outside, there can be no sub and speakers need to be on the ground,

I usually turned down events there....
Please tell me what the hell does speakers on the ground have to do with the volume being too loud. I use speakers that can be on the ground and still be really loud. I have 2 sets of double 15's that kick butt. Also it's not BS. It's the ordinance law in some places. Nothing you can do but comply to the ordinance or risk you going to jail and your gear being confiscated.

Outside, you could try extremely directional speakers placed out in the yard, aimed back at the house - one of the very few situations where I'd recommend 15" two-way tops.

It's a real shame what's happening in the US - 40% of the adult population is obese, and ( as you can see from the gig vids posted) very few really dance anymore - little wonder music irritates them. The handicap parking at Walmart encompasses almost the entire lot in front of the store, with legions riding electric shopping carts. There are other parts of the world where if you did a "House Wedding", instead of the neighbors complaining, they'd be banging on the front door to get in!

Has anyone ever experienced such a thing?
Yes.

If I were you, I'd either have a link to or print and keep a copy of the actual ordinance so that you can intelligently and effectively communicate with law enforcement.

Santa Barbara County, California - Code of Ordinances CHAPTER 40 - NIGHTTIME NOISE RESTRICTIONS

The Ordinance is very weak in that it includes language that allows for over enforcement/abuse, specifically, "Enforcement of a violation under this chapter shall not require the use of a sound level meter."

I'd petition my council to address this glaring flaw in the enforcement part of this ordinance. Without any objective limits, it's just an opportunity for abusive interpretation and unnecessary clashes with law enforcement, who'd probably rather be dealing with less pedestrian matters.

Cop told me that they would take my equipment, ticket, arrest me if I don't comply.
In my circumstance it never got to the point of threats because I was able to provide the applicable Noise Ordinance, had a SPL reader and we were within reasonable levels. The client was willing to comply with the request and the Police Officer was understanding and allowed the party to continue even though he had to deal with annoying complaints.

I always prepare my clients', whose events are outdoors, in residential or community spaces, and take place in the evening/nighttime, of the potential for such circumstances and that it is my policy to always politely comply with law enforcement and to alert said clients to the presence of said police.

I have also been on the on the side of the circumstance when an asshole deeeeejay and and asshole, racist party host refused polite post midnight requests to lower the bass levels. Eventually, law enforcement forced the assholes to comply with the law. It is actually a humorous story I have told at a few DJ get-togethers.

A few weeks ago, I was doing a wedding at an apple orchard. They have an indoor facility, but for some reason we were in the pavilion. And the indoor facility wasn't being used. I'm booked until midnight. The owner of the facility comes to me at 10 and says our neighbors called and they clearly hear every word of your music. It's way too loud. You are going to need to turn it way down. The neighbors get mad if they can hear the music after 10.

(It wasn't that loud. People sometimes mistake clarity for volume)😄

The dance floor was packed.

So I told him, well I'm booked till midnight, and that's something you should have discussed with the bride and groom when they booked the pavilion till midnight. You tell them and and they can tell me to turn it down. But I'll adjust it slightly for you.

He did go to the bride and groom. After a long discussion, the groom came over and said, "ok turn it down just a bit. That guy never said anything when we booked about having to be quiet after 10.

Wow....your post just took a bizarre ...dark turn...

So fat people are to blame? You had the option of snobs? (this was a wealthy neighborhood in California) Elderly? (the usual culprits of all sound complaints) and you went with obesity? hmmmmm

Last i checked most of the dj's on here are fat... and the ones making the noise.... lol ....ofcourse most of you are elderly too ...so that blows that theory... wait... you are snobs about dj gear too...so....cross that off...

i guess the blame could go to anyone... but bare in mind... most party animals from 80s movies were all obese.... we do enjoy a good party...in our hawaiian shirts with a sandwich in our back pocket

He didn't mention this to the couple because all his concern was making money getting paid. He didn't want the couple to look elsewhere for a venue to have their wedding. I don't understand why the wedding wasn't taking place inside. Even then someone might still complain about the music being too loud.

....I did have a copy of the law with me (same as you posed), and that does not apply here anyhow. Those laws are wirtten for after hours. This was during the daytime hours (and there is nothing written regarding daytime sound) so it falls under PC415 disturbing the peace. Absolutely no arguing or fighting that.

I even have SPL meter, and offered to use it, but since there is no set law saying what it should be or what reasonable is, the officer who gets to decide based on the complaint of he neighbor.

So, yes the officer decided where my volume should be.

Scott, Well why didn't you tell us that you send DRAMAcho to all your pre-event meetings with clients and their venue reps?

You are saying he should have set the client's expectations better? I agree.

Simply telling them to start everything early and be done by 10 if having it outside.

An experienced business owner can save himself a lot of grief by letting a client know what they are going to come up against.

Statistically, at the time we were "Party Animals" in the 80's, the US obesity rate among adults was 25%. It is now 40%, and is considered a national epidemic. You can be heavy and still be in good condition, but that's the exception. It is hard to be active when your feet and legs hurt - and that includes dancing. You'd have to be blind, both as a DJ or a guest, to not see the large number of people at a wedding who just sit, talk, and eat. It wasn't always like this - and that includes old people.

None the less, I apologize for the broad brush stroke - I shouldn't do it.

Ummm...not me...

Not me either. I’m 6’ and 200 pounds... just 5 pounds more than I was when I was 21 years old (and played full court basketball daily), and my waist is only one inch wider. I’d like to lose 5 pounds, but frankly I’m not working very hard to do it.[emoji1] I look very trim for an “older” man... much better than some younger DJ’s.[emoji4]

I was in good shape in HS (I threw javelin and shotput), beer made me less so in college, and I'm blaming marriage for the rest.
