I'm glad I'm not you. I don't have a preset mix to use at an event. I know how to read a crowd normally and will play the right music for an event. What if what you have preset isn't what a certain crowd wants, what do you do then?

I pre-make mixes for cocktail and dinner time frequently. I have a bunch already made, and I make custom ones for any couple that expresses taste that I don't already have a mix that fits perfectly.

I use them for prelude (pre-ceremony) music. Typically about 40 minutes. Cocktail hour, so I have time to break down the ceremony equipment. And sometimes dinner so I have time to eat and break down cocktail hour gear.

I mix all of the dance music live. But for background music, having some pre-set stuff is helpful.

Some DJs use an automix feature like what VDJ has. And I can do that too with MegaSeg. But I like that I can load a mix onto an mp3 player for cocktails and it runs just fine on it's own. And it sounds like I'm doing it live because I was able to tailor the blends just like I want.

This is a great method. I need to make some new premade mixes myself with newer music. Great for dinner and walkin times at wedding's.

I do the exact same as Ross, even using MegSeg for Pre-Ceremony, Cocktail and Dinner background music.

What this comes down to is what you feel comfortable with. Some like a controller you use with a laptop and others like using CD players. I like either a controller or CD player to have free moving wheels that easily spin and it scratches. If it doesn't scratch all you hear when setting up a song to be played is stuttering and that makes it difficult to mix for me. It's about what works best for you. You cn have the best of the best but if you don't know what you're doing or how to work the unit using it won't matter.

Personally I got used to using a controller and laptop together. Also there are very cheap controllers like the one I bought for backup eventually and it's nothing spectacular, yet I can make it work because I know the basics and what it's capable of doing or not doing. Whatever you use there's nothing really wrong with what you use unless it doesn't work. What do any of you use? Me I use a Denon DN MC 6000 MK 11 with a laptop and one for backup. Along with the cheap backup controller. Then there are those who strictly like a special brand and nothing else. The funny one is Gemini who is coming up a bit from what they used to offer, but are still not in the league of the true professional units. Then there are those units that every manufacturer makes. Inexpensive units that were basically made for the beginner. I had a cheap Pioneer unit that got stolen. It was in a case.

The other 2 questions are this. Are you happy with what you have now? If you had a choice on getting something else besides what you have now, what would that be? Personally I'm happy with what I use now and that's why when the other controller I had got stolen I bought the model a step up from the one I had. I love that it's light weight and compact. Not heavy and easy to carry in the case it's in. Besides that I'm a wiz at working it!

Great idea! i should probably do some dinner/cocktail sets...but i enjoy mixing them live... i figured in the event my equipment goes... i have the dinner/cocktail/pre ceremony music loaded and can just let it play ...track to track .. thats worst case scenario...

My mixes are bpm sets...multi genre... like...one set might be a few songs in the 105bpm range.... another...120...etc...etc... each one is about 10 to 15 minutes... i made several for my wedding...and then just kept making them to have around incase of defcon 1

also i carry two yamaha mg10's as my main audio mixer and backup... so my controllers mixer is far from my last line of defense if it dies... my backup devices are plugged into the mg10 and ready to go.

While I'm flattered that my name comes up in your conversations with him,
1)Don't believe everything he tells you. he was in prison, after allšŸ˜„
2) how long have you two known each other?šŸ˜„

Apparently you didn't at the last event where they asked you to play something else ..

I never liked the idea of having a computer in the booth or when I do mobile gigs. I've been using a Denon DN-HD2500 with BU4500 CD Player for the last 10 years. My music is on a 256gb thumb drive. It's all gone full circle now. I have been waiting for an all in one like this to come out. I almost go the Pioneer XDJ- RX2, and I was also looking a a pair of XDJ-700's from Pioneer. I've held off because I have always been a Denon guy. Before I pull the trigger, I want to see one on person and check it out.

I acknowledge and am cognizant of those realities but I still prefer to rely on the tried and true softwar in a robust laptop as opposed to an onboard app.

FYI, it took me more than a decade to get to trusting a laptop.

Addenda: I'm often an early adapter but not immediately on matters important to my responsibilities.

Me too...I carried CD's and extra computers forever.

I really do like this all in one unit, I like the idea of moving away from the laptop, but I have agree with Pro and his point that one part of fails and you dark, or silent, but that is why we carry backs up right?.

Of course , its a Mac only app/software.
