Some good friends that we see regularly are getting married this fall. This friend happens to have 4+ decades in the audio industry and has a good sized local sound company with top notch gear. Obviously, he will provide sound for the wedding. They've also hired a good funk band that we go out to see regularly. I will MC and play music during the breaks. However, since they want me to enjoy the day with my other half, they just want me to automix a playlist, The band is really danceable so my playlist will most likely be the slow dance breaks. All I have to bring is my computer. However, I will probably bring my 4RU ceremony case so I can do real djing if the need arises. If more gigs could be this easy, I will still be doing this regularly.

Where have you been? Been a while since we heard from you.

I love spinning between sets of a band.
As long as you get a set list so you can avoid songs that they will play...
you can just stick to the most popular songs!

If a man with your experience doesn't already know Why not, you likely won't care Why not.
Be real .. 10-15 min max is 4-5 songs. People are already sitting down from the band. You need to give them time to leave the stage. It takes a song or 2 to get folks back. So you're "mixing" for 2-3 songs ..

Sounds like an EGO thing to me .. :)

i dont know... if i own a sound company... and want my friend to enjoy my wedding...im playlisting myself and letting him truly enjoy the occasion...

and if im setting up my gear... im performing... not automixing...

otherwise id leave it to anyone with spotify

Sounds like your assuming/presuming more than thinking...but you're free to do that.

If you believe a band is going to adhere to, commit to a 10 to 15 minute time limit, I suspect you've not worked with many bands.

Regardless, playing a playlist isn't performing and it's not even close. BTW, it isn't a sin either, and I never suggested such, but it definitely ain't DJing.

P.S. Put on you big girl panties...or did you leave 'em at TBrady's house!

I used to run sound for bands .. and 15 min was the max they were generally allowed to break at bars up here. Even if NoLa is soft and they have to rest for 20-25 minutes .. still not a reason to NOT use a playlist. We can argue till the drunks get off Bourbon Street as to "what" makes a DJ .. but the Saints would still trail the Pats in SB victories ... TB14 GOAT !!

Pressing play on playlist isn't the same thing.

Who said anything about a playlist?
I specifically used the word "spinning".

There are times when I am just providing music between sets...
but I was talking about actually working to keep people on the dance floor.
(hence the part about being able to "stick to the most popular songs")

Depends on the band, the event, and what the client has hired me for.

You really have some odd obsession with negativity.
It must really make you happy.

We are discussing a band at a wedding not in a bar.

I'd post some pics, but I don't need another viral photo on my hands.
