I saw an ad that said do it yourself DJ. They supply the gear. You supply the music along with a phone, tablet or computer. This is at the fraction of the cost to book a DJ. An attendant will be there for the duration of the event. I wonder how many people will fall for this and what do they charge? I also want to know what is what they call a fraction of what a DJ charges? How do they know what a DJ charges since they are supplying BS service? Just found the ad interesting. Not worried about them putting me out of business. Even at my age.

Well in nj most djs are $800-$1200... so if they’re lower than that, they’re technically lower than most. They’re not including djs that charge $200-$400 in their calculations.

I wonder what is the list of gear being used. TP Technical Pro, Pyle Pro, Pyramid or something along those lines. Some of you may not have heard of that low end junk. That stuff is for a beginner who's just getting started and don't know any better.

Actually, some have some nice gear ...

For the renter, better gear tends to have less problems ...

I wonder what a fraction of free is

I rent out audio gear........two QSC k12 with Ultimate stands, a small 6 channel Mackie mixer and two Audio Technica wireless mics with all cables and connections for the customer to hook up their own laptop or MP3 music for $350.00 to $400.00.

Goes out about a dozen times a year. I don't have an attendant stay with the system though.

Not a bad route to take with sound equipment that may not be out on an event. And the extra +/- $4000.00 a year doesn't hurt either.

Mix no disrespect intended but I bet they get more on a rental than you make on an average gig

This is only an issue if you are in the same price range or market as they are. Actually you could go to BJs pickup some powered speakers for $170 ea which comes with a stand & mics and be done. Hook to your laptop or phone and be done if you want cheap. And for some that’s enough.

For over ten years I’d rent out older equipment to a couple of DJs. they only had to bring their records. Worked out to be pretty profitable.

I provided a speaker and microphone system for a corporate party where the client played their own music. It was a low key cocktail party, but also had a speech. So I showed up, set up 2 Bose Compacts and a microphone, and picked it up later when they were done.

Not everyone or every event needs a DJ.

I love the Bose compact. So much that I use it a home for music and audio playback. Got the little box that allows it to play any blue tooth device.

Sound system rentals aren't a new thing at all. Nothing BS about it, just an ad targetted to renting a system for dances specifically. We've been renting out sound systems for 25+ years. And, fwiw, our rental inventory has NEVER included pyle, pyramid, radio shack, etc....
And yes, they are typically a fraction the cost of hiring a DJ.

I'm sorry all. I was just thinking of the disaster I was a guest at. It was my best friends wife's family reunion and for music they were using a cheap Bluetooth speaker that lit up. They were playing a CD that was copied off of Windows media player. I knew this because as the next song was coming in being mixed, there was a second or 2 before the next song came on. The event cost people $35 to attend and it was beyond ghetto! It was in a small community room and not a decent venue. They cooked the food themselves. No problem withat but for $35 they could have had something much better then that. At least let it be a little classy. Those who attended got stuck up without a gun.

sounds like they should have rented a system. That wasn't a rental system that was a do-it-yourself. Different beasts entirely.

First off they took the cheap way out all the way. What they offered wasn't worth close to $35. They wouldn't spend anywhere near the money to rent a system.

Valerie may I ask since you've done this many times before, how much do you charge and what do they get for that price?
