RE-Reworking My Small System... AGAIN

Looks like the electrical parts I ordered are gonna be delivered tomorrow. THAT’S GREAT!!!... But it won’t do me any good because I haven’t completed the platform modifications I needed to make. More specifically, I haven’t PAINTED the modified platform pieces. Everything’s ready for painting, but it’s just too frickin’ cold to paint. Today it was supposed to reach 31 degrees, but only got up to 28. Tomorrow it may be just a little warmer. Still not likely to be warm enough for painting. Saturday is looking like the next reasonably warm day.

I have no place inside to paint; the garage is the only place I can do it. I talked to my wife about it, and I think I’m gonna check into getting a panel for the garage door that has windows, so I can work in there with the door closed and still get a little natural light. Then I’ll install a heating/AC unit in there. Might also hang some large light fixtures. That way I’ll be able to do projects in the garage year round. Not sure why I haven’t done it sooner???[emoji1]

My parts came today, so I did a test fit to see how everything was going to fit with all the cables connected...

... Not painted yet, the new power cords still haven’t been cut to size and wired into the IEC receptacle, but it looks like everything is going to fit. It will be tight, but it will fit.[emoji4]

Pretty much done with this WeGO platform...

... Single IEC power cord and the power blocks and portable disk drive are mounted under the docking station...

... I used Velcro to hold down the WeGO and docking station, and Velcro strips to keep the power blocks and disk drive in place under the docking station. Everything seems to stay in place pretty good, but there’s still one task left to do. I have some clips to attach the front of the platform to the robotic arm...

... but I’m waiting for some posts and screws to fasten the clips to the platform...

... which are scheduled for delivery tomorrow.

I tried it out and it works pretty good to use it as a stand-alone practice system with the single power cord and everything built into the platform. The nice thing is; everything can be pretty easily separated for use elsewhere if necessary.[emoji4]

UPDATE: Posts & Screws came tonight, so after dinner I attached the clip to the platform, and attached the WeGO platform to the robotic arm and it worked PERFECTLY!!!...

^^^^ This is the underside of the robotic arm, and if you look closely you can see how it’s clipped on.

Had to ream out the hole in the clip ever so slightly to get the post all the way through, but no big deal...

I’ll probably paint the screw heads because of the OCD, but that only takes a couple of minutes.[emoji4]

For you maybe...for me...oh I would not even begin to attempt ANY of this...no skills there...mine lie elsewhere.

Oh, I highly doubt that!

Nope... I’m done with the platform and this entire system. I can’t think of another thing it needs. I might swap the (AIO) computer out for a slightly smaller one, but I already have the computer I bought to test out as a possible Podium System computer. If I do it won’t look or work much differently, so I would not likely even post about it.[emoji4] So I’m done.[emoji4]

The WeGO/Surface Pro platform is pretty cool though. I can practice mixing while sitting on my couch, and I have a little Bluetooth transmitter I plug the output from the WeGO into in order to get the audio to my home stereo. I know this WeGO borders on being a toy, but it makes for a pretty nice little backup system. The only thing I have not done yet is testing out how it will be packed up and transported.

Give it a few days / weeks. We KNOW you'll be re-re-re-redoing it. ;)

Well... I won’t say NEVER, but unless I have some kind of serious equipment failure, this Small System is SET for (hopefully) a good long time. IF I happen to come across a better 1U rackmount mixer than my Rolls RM69, I might replace that, but I’m pretty happy with this little rack system.[emoji4]

Final wrap-up post... I finished this project once before (in August 2018), but I was not entirely happy with my backup computer solution. The Surface Pro with DJay Pro was OK, but would have been tough to use if I ever had to use it for more than a few minutes to get me by until I could restore my main system. So I decided to add a small controller to it. I bought the Pioneer DDJ-WeGO back in November and started working on a platform to mount it on. Got interrupted by the holidays, the weather, and laziness, but got back to work a few weeks ago. I was going to continue to use the Surface Pro with the WeGO, but the tablet slot in the WeGO was too small, so after trying a tablet holder that didn't work very well, I decided to use the docking station I already owned. Then I added a little Bluetooth keyboard. I already had a Bluetooth mouse. Prior to making the changes to my backup option, I had spent $478.21 on this project. I added $152.99 for the WeGO, $13.99 for the Bluetooth keyboard, and maybe another $40 for cables, bits and pieces. I didn't even have to buy glue or paint, or wood for the platform, and I already had the docking station, a mouse and a portable hard drive, so all in I'm at about $685.19. Not much considering all the capabilities I added. On the other hand, I added a lot of complexity and additional weight with the backup system, so maybe I went a little overboard.

Liar!

And there's the proof. The next time you see this, it will say 'I finished this project before ... (in February 2019)'

;)

LOL... OK, but just for the sake of accuracy, I really didn’t change ANYTHING in the Small System rack since completing the project in August. I actually only added components to the contingency system. Instead of plugging a USB cable from my Surface Pro to the rack (essentially to a USB hub with the Traktor Audio DJ and hard drive), the WeGO is attached to the Surface Pro, and the audio output of the WeGO connects to the Rolls mixer (via a jack on the back of the rack). The old hub and Traktor sound card are still there (inside the rack) to be used with the Surface Pro (without the WeGO), or with my laptop. Basically I now have three contingency options if you include the iPad mini.[emoji4]

SOoooo... I decided to load Traktor Pro 3 on my Surface Pro. DJay Pro is a good product, but if I’m gonna use this system as a practice system, it needs to be more like my main systems... which means it needs to have Traktor. I didn’t remove DJay Pro, so I can still use it if I want, but I’m much more comfortable with Traktor. It didn’t take much to get Traktor going... the driver and midi map were on Pioneer’s Web Site, and my Traktor license was easily loaded through Native Access. After installing software, setup only took a couple of minutes. I even ran the WeGO firmware update while I was at it. Now, I haven’t weighed it, and though it’s not what I’d consider heavy, when it’s sitting on my lap it’s not exactly light either. It’s too large for the little laptop table I use, so I might have to make a little stand for it so it has some legs instead of sitting on mine.[emoji1]...

10 pounds... I weighed myself, then weighed myself again holding the WeGO/Surface Pro platform, including keyboard and mouse. The difference was exactly 10 pounds. Not as bad as I thought.[emoji4]
