So i was just browsing Youtube and found a new gig log from a zealous young dj... and it took my back to my young days as a dj...it was the early 90s and i wanted to have all these fun little gimmicks that people would remember me by.... for a while i did this thing where i threw pez candy at the crowd...and gave away pez dispensers ...id pick up 50 bucks worth of pez on the way to dj a 100 dollar party...lolol... i tried contacting the pez company to get some sort of sponsership...i invisioned a giant likeness of my head on a hug pez dispenser that shot out pex candy at the crowd... lol...never happened ofcourse....within a few months i realized it was all silly and began concentrating on my performance...

That being said...i watched this young man's video and saw this moment happen... this moment that felt so familiar....and yet so cringeworthy ...i know in a year or two he might look back and regret it...or maybe not.... but its funny.... i admire his young zeal for the job.....he's working it out...he's trying stuff....and his dance crowd is highly supportive and forgiving...

scroll to the 3:25 mark and you will see what i mean.... he honestly filled the floor... well... those songs should fill a floor no matter what... but he owned what he did....and didnt back out...

im not a fan of big dj intros at a private gathering... i used to have around 10 intros i would use at the club... but looking back....that wasnt cool either...lol

I don't want to rag on a DJ that isn't on this forum to defend themselves, but that was difficult to watch.

Private events are not the place for intros and drops. In a club, drops are appropriate if they aren't over-used, but I would never ever play the thing he played.

lol...i loved the old man and woman doing the slow motion dance to it...he's quite lucky to have a crowd that really wanted to dance at that point...

Not gonna lie, minus that horrific intro... he's actually not that bad of a dj at all... mixes better than 90% on here lol. It is a chicago crowd so they do appreciate that house vibe.

I liked it. Would I wear the mask???... Nope... I’m too pretty to cover up. Actually, it makes my face sweat just watching. The boy has some skills, though. Seems like a good kid too. Nice little setup. That’s as much of a critique as you’ll ever get out of me.[emoji1]

Fact is; we’re all different. We play different music, we have different performance styles, and that’s GREAT!

it was bad, but it only lasted 30 seconds or so. Definitely obnoxious sounding.

At least the kid has some skills to back it up. With a little practice, he will be pretty good.

Now let's Critique his set up:

Light Show: I LIKE IT. It is UNIQUE. He isn't just throwing up a Gig Bar like I see so many DJs doing over the last 2 years and showing a light show the guests have likely seen other DJs use.

Speaker Cable/Cord Organization. NEEDS WORK. However, he is a young DJ just starting out, so he get's a pass!

GIG LOG: As Taso would say "You gotta use much shorter video clips! Keep the video to under 4 minutes long!"

I only watched 12:20 of his video, with fast forwarding through some of himjust talking. ...and I am a VERY PATIENT Gig Log Video watcher. Most are not as patient as I am.

I hope he turns out to be a successful Mobile DJ! He has Talent at a young age!

I skipped like crazy.. maybe watched a total of 3 minutes of the 25. This is his first gig log...way better than any of my events at his age! Definitely forgiving... but hes gotta get rid of that intro style... and the mask.

I am not into critiquing others videos who are not here but what’s up with the mask & bow tie. Really? That wasn’t definitely not the type crowd who appreciates that sort of silly stuff. I assuming he’s really young and the mixing was good but that wasn’t a ‘truely Crazy” party. I would just like to see him describe a party when things really go into overdrive. I am a little jealous as I have very few pictures and definitely no video (it didn’t exist affordably) from my first 4 years as a DJ.

Music wise he was on point. Kept the crowd on the floor, and he could mix. Personally I'm not into the whole mask thing, but to each his own. Maybe the power of his mix is in the MASK. Maybe like a child with his comfort blanket. I thought he did a good job with decent gear.

His light show was two dual moving head units, under his speakers, aiming down. That's it.

I got to say first off we don't know the type of event it was he was to DJ. I don't know about the mask thing. Depending on the type of event that might work but I don't think for that event it was a good idea.

His setup was nice and it looked like he had some nice gear he was using. The lights were nice. Did anybody notice he wasn't using headphones. He did to me a good job with his skills and what to play. People danced and looked like they were having a good time. You can't judge a DJ if all the people there aren't dancing. He had a nice crowd on the dance floor. Not everyone is into dancing and to be fair some simply can't dance.

Over all I liked it. He could have broken up the video into several parts because it was extremely long. Overall way to go DJ! At least he's there doing his job and not staying gone for an hour. I wish I knew what controller he was using. For certain events I could see him being the right DJ for the event. I would encourage him to keep it up and maybe invite him here to join us.

He is about 1000% better than I was early on. I was never cool enough for a club.

I started doing karaoke at a local bar.

Not my style. I've never used a pre-recorded intro and have never had a catchy Dj name. I've just always been Dj Scott.

In the company I first started with, there was another Dj that worked there named Dj Scotty Smooth, so they jokingly called me Scotty not so smooth. I was pretty rough.

BTW, today DJ Scotty Smooth is a great friend of mine and does a lot of gigs for our company. He knows how bad I was to start and was very helpful. Some of the other guys were too cool to help. They are no longer in the business.

Never did understand the REASON for the mask....
although I will say...he's got b*lls to even TRY that!
I think he WILL be a very good DJ.
Dresses well, mixes VERY well, clean setup.
But mainly because he has the guts to take chances, push the limits, and raise the bar.

I didn't have nearly as much confidence as he does, in my early days...
but I certainly wasn't afraid to look stupid.

Now, I just NATURALLY look stupid, so it works for me!

He had headphones in a couple of the shots. But when you mixing dance sets with remixes it is easy to DJ without headphones especially with sets you use repeatedly. All the info you need can be had on the waveform Display. Even back in the 70’s I used a unit called a Beatmeter to display the sound & beat. That way I wouldn’t have to turn the headphone up so loud. It is most likely the reason why I still have all my hearing now. Early on it used to get really loud at basement house parties. I remember one house party I vibrated glasses off the shelves.

Let's be fair here. We don't know the type of event he was hired to do. Different types of events require a different style for that particular type of event. I agree the mask must go. He did a nice job. Of course he did things that others on here wouldn't or couldn't have done. Yet who on here hasn't been to an event where the DJ sucked miserably? So bad that you wish you never came there . I have seen some using some dynamite gear but sucked so bad that everybody left there with a big attitude.

Then I've seen some not with the nicest gear and yet they rocked the event. So much so that you would love to be at another event where they are the DJ.

This DJ was certainly nowhere near anything like my first example.

The thing he's missing on a couple of the mixes is phrasing. In a world of sync buttons (and I'm not saying he's using it or not) getting the bpm of two songs lined up really isn't challenging. But knowing your music well enough to know the chorus length and your intros to know where you should drop the next track is important to keeping a clean sound.

I didn't listen to all of it, but coming out of Danza Kuduro he lets two bars of vocals after the chorus play as he mixes in. That's the stuff that will really clean this up moving forward to make sure all of those phrasing types of issues are tighter.
