Weddings Most Hated Requested Songs

For private, invited guests' events, my request policy is a three pronged standard:

1) Requests are welcome.
2) All requests are considered.
3) Some requests are honored.

Club request policy (updated version as previously stated in this and other forums):

I may have to increase the fees after all these years.

we hate them....but they are timeless floor fillers to so many people...
... i like to build trust with the older ones first...and save the second hour for the younger set....

That is my basic plan of attack at a gig.
Play for the older crowd first, since they are USUALLY the ones on the floor first....and the first ones to go home.
save the barn burners for the younger set, since they usually need a little time at the bar before letting loose.

i see this as dj 101...

though i see some dj's come out of the gate with the brand new stuff and then end up circling back to the classics to fix the problem...by then the older folks are alienated and frustrated.... and the younger ones who didnt support go to the dancefloor to support "their" music... because they are too cool...lol... now wonder what happened... hey... what happened to our music...i was just about to dance.

this may not be the same everywhere...but ive seen it so many times in my region

im sure some of the big sweet 16s are full dancefloor immediately...and the older folks arent considered...and thats honestly the way to play it... but if im at an all ages party or wedding... i think the best route is appease aunt Trudy

When we do weddings, we get a ton of requests. I very much limit what is actually played. What is your most hated request?

For me. I despise American Pie, and I seem to get a request for it at every event.

There a bunch of other tracks on my personal "don't play list" I get requested for a lot, but American Pie takes the cake!!
I personally love that song! I just don't get a request for that song. I have plenty of songs I either never liked from the beginning or tired of playing because I've heard it enough times.

Personally I love deep underground house music. I'm talking stuff that is fresh and not the same tired crap every other DJ has played. The problem is I don't get to play stuff like that very often. It's not about me. It's about what the client and their guests want. I'm sick of playing Follow Me. When I get a request for that song I know it's going to be a boring crowd to me. A crowd like that is stuck on stuff from back in the day that I'm sick of playing.

All of the line dances are easy picks, but most of my clients don't want them, so they're easy to avoid.

Classic slow dances I absolutely despise... Wonderful Tonight - Clapton, Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers, Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh

I truly hate all three of those songs. And I can't figure out why any of them were ever popular.
I completely agree with you on all three.

I know made this reply a little over a year now , I don't recall seeing this thread then, anyways, I couldnt stand those songs when I was growing up ( they were all in medium rotation on various radio stations when I started paying attention to music the early 90's )

But funny enough, I picked Wonderful Tonight as our first dance , my wife didnt care one bit what song , I really didnt either so that is where the dart landed on if you will.

I honestly didnt know this, and while that mayb be DJ 101, I am still in DJ100, but it makes a lot of sense.

I'll add to @Ausumm's post - if you "lose" the older guests early... you'll never get them back. They will essentially write you off 90% of the time if you don't come out of the gate with some oldies.

My typical wedding set is very oldies heavy early on with a sprinkle of new. Late in the night is the opposite being 90s to Top 40 with a few throwbacks.

While the songs change a lot, that formula works very well for me.

Thanks Ross, I am definitely going to do this moving forward .

Had a request for "In The Ghetto" by Elvis Presley. That was in the middle of dance prime time. lol. Told him I would look it up. Never played it.

Good call.

He might has well have requested this:

Same effect on the dance floor...

I've never gotten that request but wish I did. I love that song. I know this an older thread. I have a bunch of songs I hate to play. One I never liked ever is Candi Staton Victim. She's been a victim long enough. When is she going to stop being a victim?
