DJing from a balcony...

Fight for your right! Just get through this one.

At least he is not in as a bad of a situation that I was in since I had the L1s with almost no vertical coverage. It was awful sounding.

It's not what you want to hear, but from experience having "no choice" to setup speakers upstairs can be avoided for future events. You will have to include that part along with your other prep and planning to DJ the event in the best way possible. You should be bringing it up in the pre-consultation meetings, and of course don't take the job if it makes you look bad. You can say No.

yeah... i took the gig because i was quite familiar with the venue... then the curveballs started coming in... im wrapping my head around it and moving forward.... if i look bad...atleast i will look bad in a hazy dark balcony....maybe they will think im some other fat bald dj... theres plenty of them out there...tee hee

I see you said the bride doesn't want speakers in her pictures for her wedding. That's the first time I've ever heard such a thing. That's got to be a super small room. What's wrong with the photog making sure none of the pictures have speakers in them.

I like it better if the reason is the setup for the room is too crowded for the DJ to be on the floor. Thus putting the DJ on the balcony.

That event I mentioned was in a hall that I don't like. The place itself is very small. So realistically for things to be comfortable the limit should be 75 people and then a DJ. There also is not a lot of room for any gear that the DJ can use in that hall.

You don't like to read, do you? The reason is 1: there is no room and 2: they don't want equipment on the stage (which is where they will be).

You don't like to read either. He said they didn't want speakers in the pictures. I guess that will include anybody making a speech. LOL.

I can read perfectly fine - which is why I took the time to explain it to you.

I'm certain if there was room for speakers on the floor, they could have been on the same floor but in an area away from the stage.

I have never liked working on a balcony.
Although it isn't an issue at most of my local venues...
we DO have a lot of places with a large stage, that is so tall that it's just as bad as a balcony.
The only way to communicate with me or make a request,
is to maneuver your way thru the side stage door, up a dark stairway, and thru other hazards backstage.

Getting around it is sometimes as easy as ASKING!
But talking to the venue manager is a waste of time, if the client wants you there.

If you are OK with people giving you requests, you can have them text you their request. That way nobody has to climb up stairs to get to you to make a request.

I'm not being funny here because some DJs don't take requests and some clients don't allow their guests to make requests. My ego isn't that big that I won't take requests. Just have to watch out for the request. Some are inappropriate for the event or the request will kill a dance floor. Good thing for me I am normally able to recover quickly from a bad request and have the floor filled again.

i will accept requests... but im not going to make it easy... they will definitely have to climb the stairs and remove the multiple 2x4s ive nailed over the entry way....easy peezy

You could tie a large paperclip on a long string and have it hanging from the booth area .. then you can reel it up when someone attaches a request ..

I work a loft where the bucket is to retrieve my beverages. The bar happens to be right under the loft.

Talk about working from a balcony.......my wife and I spent our anniversary last night at the Opryland hotel. In the Delta area (see pic), they had a DJ playing from the balcony where the "Stax" sign is hanging. They have JBL line arrays/subs scattered, all throughout the area. You wanna talk about DJing remote, that dude was remote.

BTW, I don't have any pics but I have to tell you, opryland hotel had one of the coolest LED light curtain displays in that same area. The entire circular area, to the right of the building, had 20-30 foot LED light curtains that were DMX controlled, and hanging down around that big circle. Wish I had some pics to show you but it was entirely smoking.

The sound is really nice in that place! Everything is! Do they still have the dancing water fountain that goes like 50' in the air?
