CVE-10 CERWIN VEGA Powered Loud speaker

I took a listen at my local L&M the other day and they didn't sound bad. The would definitely need a sub. I'm considering trading one set of NX55 in towards them they would come in around $100/unit after the trade I figure

I have an affection for CV my first speakers were CV when they still made good speakers. The went through a terrible phase now seem to be coming around.

I'll check for the Avante's later today thanks
I don't want to insinuate that the CVs aren't more than adequate. Most powered speakers today are. The Avante were a hit at the DJ Expo the past 2 years.

124db spl seems a little weak for a 10 incher and I think these would be a downgrade in quality from your Yorkies. Are you looking at these from strictly a weight saving standpoint?

Yes weight would be my big concern. I'm not sure how much weight savings there would really be when I would have to take a sub everywhere with them

I also feel that the 124Db and 1000 watts are a little exaggerated

I saw the Cerwin Vega series of speakers at CES show couple years ago. The ones I Believe saw were the 12" and horn with a sub. They sounded great and the build of the cabinets looked very substantial. You could see the quality there and I liked the design. Unfortunately I don't know anyone using the series and I already have a similar system. Cerwin Vega was one the first real DJ speakers I had when I first started eventually having four of their T-36s. I actually got a chance to talk with Gene the founder about the Vega subs, thermal factors and he was going thermally connect the drivers to the Aluminum heatsink on the front plate thus increasing the power rating. He was a really nice guy. Personally I would go with a 12" because I can use mine without subs if heavy bass isn't required. I banged the specs on my JBL's against the Vegas and the Max db on both 124 with the JBL listing peaks of 129. I started using my JBL without sub for Outdoor Movies of up to 200 with great success. I don't think that if I went a 10" I'd be able to do that. I've heard the Avante couple of times and they sound good and the pricing is great. But without a track record & known name I would a few years to see how they fair in the field.

FWIW, the ownership has changed a bit over the years. Stanton bought them in 2002, and then Gibson (Guitars) in 2012. So that might have influenced the changes in quality you saw. Sadly, Gibson overextended itself and recently filed for bankruptcy, so another change in ownership may be in the offing...

How guitar maker Gibson could recover from bankruptcy

Same here... i was sad to hear they dont have the same reputation anymore i guess...

mine were just normal stereo speakers...i carpeted the box and added some protective hardware.... i was a silly kid at the time...lol

Hey Jeff, I'm sure you received the flyer but just in case you didn't, the CV CVE-10 you were looking at is now 50 bucks off at L&M.

And while you're at it, they also have the new Yorkie EXM400 portable system on special for rental at $45 for the month.
I know you are just dying to rent it so you can give us a full gear report. Since you will be getting 50 bucks off of the CV's it won't really cost you anything! ;)

Actually I haven't seen it yet thanks TJ. I'm mulling over a few options I'm in no immediate rush to pick them up but I will be getting something as a long term solution. Right now I have an assistant so the lifting is at a minimum

It's funny you mentioned the 400's I was thinking today about maybe taking a pair out on spec for a gig. I really don't want to do it for a wedding maybe a Birthday party or something

I do wish we had something similar to the Long & McQuade chain here. Tough to find decent rental houses away from the big cities.

Do you have a GC close by Steve? I have limited experience with them but I found them to be a lot like L&M

This particular store has been in the community for years. It started as McKnights Music which was a local outfit and when Frank the owner retired he sold out to Musicstop which was a regional store. They eventually sold out to L&M and we all figured it was a bad thing they were national and very large but it's probably the best thing that ever happened in the gear business around here. Once they know you they will bend over backwards to see you satisfied. The rental rates are great too you can rent a basic system with everything you need to be up and running in the range of $100/month. There has been a few guys around here that have done that until they get big enough to buy

I've had an account there for years and about 98% of my gear budget is spent there. I can take almost anything out on spec and I usually do try before I buy. Sometimes it costs a little more than I would pay online but to me it's worth every dime. I can't say enough about them

I have asked in the past at the 2 GCs near me and they didn't rent. Maybe things have changed.

The one here rents. I have never rented from them, but it's nice to have the option. Knowing myself as I do, I'm more likely to buy (even for a one-time deal) than to rent. I always rationalize that I MIGHT... SOMEDAY... need that gear again.[emoji1]

I'm inclined to buy as well, but occasionally, there might be a need for 'more' and sometimes an easy rental is the best answer. I rent large power gear (tractors, lifts and such) as needed.
