Backup Option: Pocket PC

The little laptop is kinda pricy... would rather use a tablet instead. The Nano computer is WAY more powerful than what I would need for DJing, but I don't do video.[emoji4]

What software will you use?
I use Rekordbox but the DJ2GO2 is mapped with Serato Lite, which is all I really need for a backup.

would be the alternative to carrying an extra keyboard

The one thing I dislike most about a touch-screen, if you're also using a controller, is the same thing I dislike about using a laptop... You have to reach across the controller to use the keyboard. If you have a very small controller, not as bad. But if your controller is pretty large, you might be reaching some distance. If the touch-screen is on the other side of your controller... same problem. If you are using the touch screen on a flat surface instead of a controller, then that could work. ... but then there's the oily fingerprints and smudges on the screen.[emoji1]

That thing (pocket PC) probably will not run Serato reliably. You need an Intel Core i3,i5,or i7 cpu. Even AMD processors are buggy - it's just the way Serato is coded. Older versions may run, but older versions will not have DJ2GO2 support.

lol that thing! yeah... how about the NUC with a 15 inch touchscreen and BT keyboard/mouse combo?

You can use a DJ2GO(or 2) with an Apple iPad ... that would be my choice since the iPad is a stable platform. I use an iPad Mini with Traktor and DJay .. no controller, since the ipad is touchscreen anyway. It's my go to music backup.

Spec wize, it looks good - but it looks like it is completely passively cooled, no fans - it probably has to sit completely in the open to avoid overheating. Plus, you still need a monitor/keyboard/mouse.

I know the world has gone iPad/touchscreen crazy, but I still prefer a plain laptop!!

My new Nano PC's are also passively cooled. This is why I need to do A LOT of load testing to see if they'll overheat. I'll run a playlist in Traktor for 4-6 hours non-stop (looping through it), and watch to see how high the temperatures get, or if they shut down. In just the little bit I've tested so far, though... the heat is not bad.[emoji4] I think Traktor is not as resource demanding as Serato, though. Not sure about Rekordbox?

same here

My iPads each have about 25,000 songs each stored in them. Then with Spotify integrated into the djay app, grabbing a song on the fly is pretty simple.
It's become more than a great back up

I don't understand the move away from laptops, IMHO the perfect solution for DJ'ing, or for backups.

I've got two 17" laptops, same OSS, same DJ software, and the same music files mirror imaged on each other. No issues with WiFi or streaming - everything's on the HD's. They automatically include screens, keypads, USB ports, and even touchpads (although I always use a mouse). They fit in a laptop bag, along with my controller.

Both Cross DJ and Serato (my two favorites) look great on the 17" screens. I use larger fonts in the library and there is still plenty of real estate.

I spend time prepping music. Adding Que points, loops, what mixes with what, editing out sections, making permanent BPM changes (especially anything that requires more than a 5% change to mix)............streaming makes zero sense to me.

The CDJ/Mixer/Memory Stick crowd is concerned with computer reliability. I have had NO laptop or software failures EVER that weren't my own fault, and on important gigs, the other laptop is already booted up, ready to go. I am knocking myself on the my head three times right now! :humble:

Using other than this, as Spock would say, is not logical.

I'm also an IT guy - and I've seen plenty of failures. They usually happen at the most inappropriate time. With the system I carry, even though the controller can support 2 laptops, there simply is not enough real estate to have 2 laptops running all the time. As for redundancy, there's no way I'd have another complete system up and running (especially not for multiple locations) - but I am prepared in the event of several levels of catastrophic failure. The first layer, an iPad is at the ready (and is more than capable of performing in this capacity). :)

Certainly I've seen failures. The dropped stuff, the liquid pored into stuff. However, I believe the true enemy is heat.

In my career job at XEROX, we tried marketing a PC. It was made by Olivetti in Italy, flopped in the marketplace, so it was was mainly used by XEROX as a GUI to operate the large laser printers installed in mainframe computer rooms.
1) Most of those rooms were kept at 65 degrees
2) The Olivetti PC's had a 5" muffin fan which was always on high speed - real noisy, but they moved a lot of air.

The result of this is the thing was dead nuts reliable. They were turned on and never shut off. One of our customers, who never upgraded his equipment, had a few that ran continuously for 13 years. That is not a typo.

Long story short, make sure there is plenty of open space under your laptop.
