Another "life lesson" today learned. You guys may remember the photog friend, with whom I parted ways a couple of years back? Husband-wife team and he got pissed that my wife wanted to do wedding photography as well (claimed he wasn't upset), and he quit booking my DJs with his packages and went to my competitor. He was supplying about 20% of my bookings, although there was very, very little margin for me on his gigs. A year later, he was tired of the other DJ's lack of communication and asked me if I'd start working with him again, but under the condition that I'd put up a DJ-only website for him to reference. I decided to pass. During that time, he and his wife had partnered up with another photog couple and they formed a new company. It was a tough decision but I decided to stay on my own and not go back to working with him.
Fast forward to yesterday, I spoke to the guy's partner and found out their partnership dissolved. My former friend's wife is now only shooting elopements and he is, get this...........selling used cars. After completely laughing my arse off for a few minutes it really hit home that you should never let yourself get in the position where someone else is feeding you. Do your OWN marketing and cut your OWN deals and make your OWN profits. It's never wise to trust your fortunes to the whims of others.
