Outdoor events

It just so happens we're doing an event right now and it started raining. Good thing all the equipment is up on a patio underneath a little covering. So no issues with the rain damaging the equipment. Just had to move the base for the cordless microphone and the 2 mics. Nice group of people. A lady graduated from college. Plenty of food and my partner is playing the music.

I kinda worry about outdoor events. Not sure about your systems but outdoor use can void the warranty on my speakers and it is not part of normal use or installation.

I was just looking at some upcoming events, I have one coming up Memorial Day weekend that looks like will be on an outdoor, covered pavilion. The website of the venue has no pictures of dance floor, so I'm a bit curious. It also looks like I'm doing ceremony sound.

I like outdoor venues, one of my favorite venues here in Kansas is outdoors with NO indoor options, I always get nervous there, but I've been lucky. At least twice, I've finished packing my gear as the rain has started but I've never been rained out.

Looks like they are also playing a music channel on the tv.

Yep, it was on throughout the house and the owner made a big deal about not turning the TV off. She claimed it takes them several days to turn it back on. Bless her heart, the couple is in their 70s and ever time I've been to that venue it's been the same story. She runs around beforehand and worries everyone (including the clients) to death until she finally realizes she's on every one's last nerve. Then she disappears for a while and comes back out towards the end. They offered us to buy the place for $600k, about 10 years ago. Now, they've had it listed for a few years at $1.3 million. The place could be a good business but they've just done minimal maintenance for years and the buildings are in very poor shape.

I'm not sure what kind of speakers you have but if you're using brand name equipment, outdoor use will not void the warranty and is a part of normal use. I wouldn't buy equipment that could not be used outdoors.
Read your manual/warranty info very carefully.
Most warranties will be void if the product is used around heat or humidity. My Bose L1Cs specifically say not to use it outside. What about your speakers I

I got one this week...used it at the wedding saturday, one speaker wired and one via stealth so I could get to the other side of the large opening in the tent. Worked great.

Only issue is i was sent a 610-640mhz version..before purshasing I spoke with alto and they said tehy would update it to 540-570, so this week i'll be making that happen.

Here are the shots from setup last night. It took about 150 feet of cable. I gotta get one of those Alto Stealth rigs.

My powered boxes (and most others) say do not use in direct sunlight. Nothing about using them outdoors. The reason you don't want to use powered boxes in direct sunlight has to do with the amp and additional heat. I think you can figure out why you don't use them in the rain. My passive speakers say nothing about outdoor use whatsoever.

The manual for the Bose L1 Compact says:

---------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or electrical shock, do not expose the system to rain or moisture.
Note: The product must be used indoors. It is neither designed nor tested for use outdoors, in recreation vehicles, or on boats.

---------------------------------------------------------------

While this is what the manual says, on Bose website, under FAQ, you'll find the following:
Bose® L1® Compact System

---------------------------------------------------------------
Can the system be used outdoors?

Yes. The system can be used inside or out, but shouldn't be exposed to precipitation or extended periods of direct sunlight.
(and this is exactly what every other mfr warns about as well)

I translated that as a typical cover-your-ass move by Bose.
My interpretation was a little off.
Either way, I use the system outdoors regularly and get compliments each time.

Had a call from the planner on my other outdoor event (5/26). They want me to setup on a concrete patio, no covering. She called to discuss rain plan and was trying the "oh, there's only a 20% chance of rain", even though it's still 10 days out. I ended up telling her that if there's zero percent chance of rain that I'm willing to setup in the open but, if there's any chance of rain then they either have to provide a tent (covering) or they have to let me move to an alternate location (there's a building with an overhang). She kept trying to wiggle out of it but I kept nailing her with "it's in my contract that it's the client's responsibility". To be honest, I'm pretty worn out with this one. This client has pestered me more than 20 others, combined. She even alluded to the fact that she was being a pest (she brought it up, not me) in an earlier email. I'll be glad when this one is in the books.

Please do an event log on this one! And best of luck!

Will do. Here's a shot of the house. This is Reba McEntire's former home, which was sold a year or so ago and is now opening as an event venue. In the shot, they're wanting me to setup on the upper patio, to the left of the house. It really should be a showcase type gig but man, I'm just over it. I just want this one to be over and done.

You seem to express that sentiment on a pretty regular basis about DJing. I know you're moving slowly that way, but it sounds like you're not really finding the joy in the work. We all have grinding gigs, but is this something you still want to pursue?
