Serato is learning from Adobe

Maybe they are learning from VDJ again as they have offered this for a while, just another feature they have added that VDJ has offered for years that serato has finally added

I am always amazed at the number of people who rent VDJ, and say they can’t afford to purchase it

Rental seems to be the way software is going. I checked the Serato site, but didn't see the monthly option offered. Between Serato and VDJ, which one do you prefer? On the surface, I really liked VDJ's features but after I got to using it, it seemed to have several little bug-a-boos. The hot-play feature never seemed to work right, video was herky-jerky and embarrassed the crap out of me one gig, and seems I was always bumping some button on the controller (MC6000) that would cause it to stop playing. Man, there just ain't nothing worse than having a floor full of dancers who are having a great time, it goes dead and they're all glaring at you like they're about to cut you.

I prefer PCDJ over Traktor over VDJ/Serato .. for my needs. I've run some form of PCDJ on and off for 10 years. I bought Traktor and it works fine too. I have Serato, since the full version came with my MC6000II, but find it more awkward to use, though I haven't spent a lot of time with it. I used to use the old Numark CUE (VDJ) years ago, and I have a version of VDJ express. I might consider it at some point, only for the well integrated karaoke and video. PCDJ Dex has OK video and karaoke built in.

I've been using Traktor from the time I started DJing almost four years ago. I tried them all, but Traktor seemed to be the most intuitive to me (once you get it set up correctly), so that's what I chose. Recently, I tried Serato and VDJ because I was having trouble getting Traktor to work with my MC6000MK2 (a problem I've since resolved). Between Serato and VDJ, I liked VDJ better. VDJ worked right out of the box, and had a couple of features I liked pretty well, but still prefer Traktor over-all. To be honest, I never used either Serato or VDJ except to test/practice, so I have no idea how reliable they would have been, but Traktor has NEVER failed me. I'll likely stay with Traktor until I quit DJing or until they quit producing/supporting it.[emoji4]

I read some reviews on-line about PCDJ (being buggy and unreliable), which kinda scared me away. I know how on-line reviewers are though... many of them don't have any idea what they're doing, and often it's operator error, NOT the software. I'd be interested to know what your experience with PCDJ has been? I always liked the look of it, and the features seemed to be comparable to the other options.[emoji4]

I use the basic features (which is why they all work for me for the most part) and really haven't had any issues. I had an audio issue maybe 5-6 years ago, but it was fixed in a patch.

I actually use PCDJ DEX RE, which used to be what they called Red Mobile. Basically 2 decks instead of 4 and no video capability. Does have karaoke though. Might do the upgrade at some point now that I have a small library of videos .. or maybe buy VDJ if I can get it on sale.

I wish Traktor did video and karaoke ...

I'm a little worried about Traktor. I don't know how long it can survive without adding those features. I fully believe that video is the future of DJing, so you have to have that capability in your software.

Of course, I have NO intention of going the VJ or Karaoke route... too much gear to set up/tear down and haul around. I'm gonna end up a dinosaur DJ... obsolete... and I've only been doing it for less than 4 years.[emoji1]

I thought you were already a dinosaur and obsolete?

[emoji1] Not yet, but close.[emoji1]... There are still a lot of DJ's in this area who still offer just music and dance lights... But maybe I'm living in the land of the dinosaurs???[emoji1]

Thankfully, with my boyish looks and charm, I can still pass for 56 ...

Digital DJ Tips just posted the results of a huge 32,000+ DJ survey. One of the questions was which software you use -What-software-do-you-use-to-dj.png
My two favorites are at the top and bottom of the graph. Many, like Mixmeister and Deckadance, aren't even on the graph. Look where Rekordbox is, and it's only been out two years! It might actually be ahead of VDJ if they didn't count, how shall I say this, "creatively obtained software", a major issue for Atomix prior to V8.0

Current thinking is that unless the folks at NI wake up, this will turn into a two player war - Serato and Rekordbox. Take a look at their websites!

Except for Serato's superior library management, Cross DJ is my overall favorite for the mostly Latin music I spin. Unfortunately, it's parent company Mixvibes is committing suicide.

As they are a Gibraltar based company and tend to have a European fan base, the results might be skewed. They never asked me .. :)

Rekordbox is really cool, and has a lot of nice features, but it only runs on Pioneer hardware, and only selected Pioneer hardware at that. Needs to open up to other hardware manufactures if it's gonna compete for the top. Not everyone uses Pioneer gear.[emoji4]
