Looking for feedback and suggestions for my idea. I have a sweet 16 for my Niece coming up next month in New Jersey. I was trying to come up with an idea that would be unique and interactive for the kids. I'm not sure if anyone has attempted this or if this is something you feel would work. Here my idea:

I have a 46 Inch Wide Screen TV that I do not use, except for an occasional Karaoke assist for some events. I wanted to use the TV as a monitor by flipping it on its side so that it is taller rather than wide. I also will construct a frame that the TV will fit into so it looks like a giant iPhone with all the features on the frame to make it look authentic. I would create a Facebook site for this event and at the party pass out the site address to all the arriving guests asking them to use their phones (and there will be many) to ask the site to accept them as a friend. I will have a separate computer with internet access as the access for the Facebook site and the monitors driver.. Guests will be asked to take photos, make comments, and post to that site. I will display all posts on that monitor so it appears like a iPhone connected to that Facebook site for all to see next to my DJ set up. After the function, I will give my Niece the full access to that site so that she has all the comments photos, and videos to enjoy as hers.

Now, your thoughts.. good, bad, indifferent and any suggestions. Anyone seen anything like this before? I'm sure there are things I still need to consider and may be missing.. I'm hoping all the great minds out there will have something to say. Thank you in advance for your suggestions and opinions!

Welcome to the board

That is a really cool idea

It's a cool idea in theory, until you consider that everyone at the party will be staring at their phones even more than they normally do. Afterwards, they'll remember their comments and postings, but they won't remember the actual party because they were too busy commenting and posting about it. I know you want to impress... but you don't want to steal the show from your niece. She's the star.

A better idea would be to get a Photobooth with scrapbook service. You'll get better quality pictures and handwritten comments that your niece will keep forever, and you can upload all of the pictures to a Facebook album after the party's over.

Brendan, a real and considerable concern. Still it's my feeling that I can control the floor.. I can also turn off the giant iPod at will so when I want dancing, I can concentrate on that aspect. Then when something else is happening, I can turn it on. There will be a photo booth and I'm sure that will draw a lot of the teens to it... I think I can control the "wow" or moth to a flame aspect of that. Thanks for your concern and your caveat!

Tome, it's a cool idea, period and no need to turn it off. I've been doing somewhat the same thing for the past 3-4 years. People do not just stand around and watch the screen. They interact with it, then move on. It adds to the excitement and puts you as the provider of something "really cool". My only suggestion is to not create a FB page for the event but rather use your company page. This is a great opportunity to add friends or likes, which can help your marketing on future events. However, if you make the guests have to do a friend add before they can post, they won't use it. It takes too much time and requires your admin to approve before they can post (another lag time). My question is, what kind of internet connection will you have? Is it reliable? Are you dependent on the venue's internet? With it being a live connection, it's gotta be dependable and fast or you have egg on your face. In my own case, I use google voice to take text messages, then copy them to a custom presentation software. I like your idea but I'm not sure that it's going to scale large enough to be better than what I'm doing now. The look of Facebook is obviously going to be superior to my little homemade thingy but you've got to remember that you're trying to serve video to a large group of people. If it's not physically large enough it comes off as pitiful. One more issue to consider. We regularly get inappropriate messages at our events. You can bet you'll get them also. Pre-approval is vital (I hear this concern voiced from prospects all the time) and there's no way to do that with FB.

I assume you have a way to turn the video so it is vertical...

But here's a similar idea we had for an event...
it's a 60" TV on a stand with a decorative frame.

If you're displaying a MS Windows screen, it's simple to rotate the image... You press and hold the Ctrl and Alt keys while pressing the Left, Right, or Down arrow to rotate the screen. Because a typical user is unaware of this feature, we used to play pranks on people who walked away from their PC's while still logged on, by rotating their displays sideways or upside down. It made them crazy trying to figure out how to turn it back. I actually had one user try turning their computer on its side, thinking that would somehow rotate the display.[emoji1]

I knew a guy who used to copy the desktop as a picture...
and then use that picture as a NEW desktop background.
Looks perfectly normal until they try to click on something.

This thread originally started in 2013... times were different... however in 2018 no teenager really has facebook. It's all instagram and snap. Due to their privacy settings its very hard to pull their content to do something like this. You have to tell every single guest to turn their profile to public during the party... which lots of teens don't like to do... even if its temporary for 5 hrs.

Once again social media is a regional thing. Snap still isn't as huge as FB is here. Instagram and Twitter are pretty big, but FB still rules it. It won't be long before it changes, but that's the current status.

While you are right, social media is global, there will always be regions or areas where something is not as big as it is in other places.

I couldn't disagree with this statement more. Social media is a global thing.
I think he meant that how said social media is used and interwoven into the fabric of local life, is regional in nature ...

Yes. Social media is a global thing as well as regional. I meant that what is a fad in social media in one part of the world may not necessarily be the "in thing" here yet. Or things on social media could have been popular here at one time, but just now growing in use in another part of the country/world.
