I tried several different laptops (brands and OS) and still experience a sound drop of 1-2 seconds about 4 times an hour (either headphone jack or my usb sound card).
Every tweak has been done to these laptops (black viper, other research, etc). The software uses 2% of my cpu and I do have 4 gig of ram which isn't taxed either. Once every 10 minutes my audiodg.exe file jumps to 95% and can cause a drop, but drops can even happen when the task manager performance is stable. These laptops have not seen the internet nor have anti virus programs or bloatware. These new lappys are a lot faster than my old stable ones, along with Win 64bit rate.
I have one Toshiba (win7) and HP(xp) from 10 years ago that work 100% perfect, but these are getting old and need reliable replacements.
I guess what I am asking for is anyone specific to Rockit Pro ver5 that has been through this. I know if Rick was still around he would enjoy tracking down the issue (s). I am pretty sure there is one specific thing I am missing (tweaking).
Yes, I would love to move on to a different software, but if this "lite", but comfortable software can't cut it, the risk is too high to migrate to something different.
Regards, and many thanx,
joncor

Hey Joncor welcome to the board....If you get a chance please let us know a bit about you in the introductions thread

Yes Sadly Rick isn't with us anymore but I believe there are a few here still using Rockit. I have never heard of this problem before but I'm not a regular user either.

Are you using the same drive on all computers or do you have the music installed on an internal drive? I had a similar problem with Mixmester a few years back and it turned out to be a buggy drive corrupting the MP3's

I'm sure someone will be along with more helpful advice

Hi Jeff,
I am running off the "C" drives, however you did give me an idea to trying running from and external just to see if the problem follows. Not too sure if this is more efficient or not, or if it would circumvent an issue on the motherboard.
Regards,
Joncor

I was an avid RockIt user for a few years. I NEVER had any issues with it.

It was simple and had features and functions I really wanted.

When and from whom did you purchase the software?

I recall Ricky saying his software "called home" on occasion .. wonder if it tries to make connection to a non-existant server and cuts out.

Also, 4Gb RAM is too small for DJ use, since most systems use part of that for video buffering. Adding 4Gb is low cost and would help all-around.

I remember him saying it phoned home too - but it should be able to continue with or without that connection - and it certainly shouldn't be doing it once every 10 mins. Maybe it's not registered? I do remember him saying something about each machine having a unique registration.

I got the registered software ver 4.0 from Rick 8-10 years ago, along with the upgrade 5.0 a few years later. Being that it did not have to call in (initialize) when I purchased it , and that my lan & wifi are disabled, I do not think it is "calling". I did not see this in the config code of the program either. I do not use the video portion, just mp3 playback from c drive.
I do remember a long, long time ago talking to Rick and (I could be wrong) but I think we discussed some device that checked the battery level every so often. I disabled the "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" in device manager (if that was this) with no luck.
Maybe I will try another software (Mixxx) to see if it is actually the software or hardware. Although I do not use Windows media player I did try it and it seems to works fine (but is not an option for Djing).

Like the old PCDJ Red, Rockit uses the OS resources to operate. Thus, it's only as good as the machine it's running on. Make sure to disable Aero and any other unnecessary background processes (including virus protection). Also, be sure to have your codecs up to date. Rockit seems to work well under Windows 8 and 10, but you may want to set to run as administrator and as Windows Vista or 7.

*Also, make sure your folder structure and tagging is good. Keep your library in the shortest path. IE: C:\My Library vs. C:\user\name\music\dj\my libray, etc.

Hank,
Thanks for your tips. I actually have always followed all you listed with a few I will look into.

* Aero (not too sure what this is)
* Codecs....I will have to figure out how to update this.

These lappys are a lot faster than the old XP machine I have that is rock solid.

Funny you mentioned the old PCDJred (dvm?) I used that when I first switched to software. In retrospect, what a mistake that was. This program had propitiatory tags that, to this day can't be changed. "Time left" in a song has about 20-30 seconds after the song ends. I do believe it added this hidden time slot for it's propitiatory info, but shows up as dead space on other DJ software.
Thanks much!!

If the software is 8-10 years old and has not been updated, may I suggest that you find something else. Rick was a great guy but the software is done.

Time to move onto to something with regular updates and takes advantage of new technology.

Not sure if you use it, but you may want to uncheck the first set of options in the audio settings. If you have the start level or scanning enabled, it may affect the currently playing track when you load a new one. Not sure what else to offer. Like Jim posted above, Rockit has always been a stable piece of software for me on various machines. Don't rule out the sound card or encoding of your files.

Good luck.

*Heading into the wedding season with new software is not the time to deal with learning curves (and very possibly the same hardware issues). As I said, Rockit has been rock solid, just having issues with a quirky laptop.

*Hank, that is exactly how mine is setup. Updated codecs did not help

* No go on updated codecs (tried windows latest and k-lite.

Well, I give up. Time get another laptop that may not have this inherited quirk. I appreciate all the input you guys have given.

Current versions of Windows have MANY more background processes than earlier versions .. another reason to move above the 4Gb RAM level .. 8 would be the recommended MINIMUM.

Update,

*Never had my ram top out over 25% usage. Tried Win 10 to see if issue went away, and then went back to Win7 64 bit pro after no success.

A clue can up in trying Mixxx software/freeware that every time I did a search it would slightly distort the sound. So i went and opened the video software program on the laptop called AMD-Vison and saw that I could lower processor usage for the onboard video (it was maxed out). I also took the screen resolution down a few notches.
So far after 45 minutes everything is good,,,,but this has tricked me before. Wish me luck!

Would be true if running a 64bit O/S, otherwise wasted money.
I can only hope no newer box running Win10 is running at 32 bits.

The OP later stated he's running Windows 7, 64bit, so no issue. Just out of curiosity, is Rockit a 64 bit application?
Not sure .. I ran it for so little since it doesn't support the iTunes database format .. LIKE EVERY OTHER APP OUT THERE :). I tried to get Ricky to support it, but he hated Apple.
