I recently picked up the micro and royal galaxians. Nice lasers, just wish they were DMX controllable (starting to learn DMX now).

I rented one of the lights out to another DJ and gave him strict instruction on how to use it per the manual. He loved the light and showed me some pics of his event and I saw he had the light sitting on his table pointed directly at the crowd. He said he thought it was fine after watching a few youtube videos.

Just wondering what your thoughts are here. I'm pretty risk averse when it comes to things that can get me sued. For now I use these lasers on the ceiling or on a wall outside of direct eye range.

You are using it correctly, your friend is not.

This is one of my biggest irritations. DJs who point any laser towards a crowd. There's warnings on the boxes, on the units and in the manuals saying don't do it, but yet DJs still do it. In my opinion, it's one of the things that make people treat DJs (as a whole) like a bunch of uneducated idiots, because it looks like we can't even read.

Oh, and the manufacturer videos that show lasers pointing down...the manufacturers that do that are just as guilty of being a bunch of ignorant idiots, just looking for a cheap buck and not actually caring about what they do.

Agreed but to the OEMs credit at least there are no people in the shots...Sadly the videos this DJ referred to were from other DJs gig logs.

I've done pointing up and down with mine.

If you point down, just make sure it's below crotch level. I've never had a problem, unless there's some toad stool that want's to be stupid, and look at the damn thing. You can't fix stupid.

True, but just by pointing them down, they give the impression that it's okay to do that.

Personally, my favorite part of using lasers is when I look over and see some 3 year old who has my fixture in his/her hands and is staring right into the lens. Ah, that crap just never gets old. ;)
You are a Sadist!
