Weddings Those $10 song downloads you will most likely never use again... what is your take?

I dont think $10 is too much for a special song
and chances are, I'll get a request for "A SONG FOR MY SON" and the others more than once in my lifetime.
but I've only had this issue come up twice in 20-years

first time, the bride had ALREADY bought it and received it...so I used it.
the second time, the bride KNEW it was an internet-only purchase
so she offered to buy it when I told her I did not have it.

but in the end,
I'd pay 10-bucks for a special song!

I've seen this is a rising trend, lately.

If you agree to buy them, how many times a year would you spend $10-$15 dollars on a single, less than 3 minute, poorly-produced song?

How MANY of these songs would you purchase, per client? What if they wanted different ones from different websites for mulitiple special dances? And, as was mentioned earlier, what if they chose one of these songs, you bought it, and then they changed their mind, and either went with something from your music library, or asked you to spend another $10-$15 on another one of these gems?

What if this manner of selling music becomes more and more popular, and the sellers raise the price to $20 a song... or $50... what would you do, then?

AHHHH! MY BRAIN HURTS!

I don't mind $10...even for ONE crappy song.
if it got out of hand (in any of the ways you mentioned)
I'd have to reconsider passing the cost onto the client.

I just don't see how these artists are missing the point of mass distribution on iTunes.

One of the websites I was trying to buy on closed at 6pm and required payment over the phone.

Sorry, you just lost my business.

I look at it this way.

IF me DJ'ing was a business I could sell on iTunes. Instead of charging $10 through my website, I'd let iTunes channel the business 24/7 for a tenth of that anyday. Make money while I sleep.

I totally agree. To me, it's the same logic that some DJs use in not accepting credit cards. They don't want to give up a small % to make it MUCH more convienent for people to do business with them and capture more business. They are not looking at the big picture. They are looking at how much they are making per transaction.

These places could easily sell the mp3 for a few dollars, not have any production costs, or order fullfillment costs, and sell a lot more. They could still sell the "decorative" cd case for those times someone wanted to give it as a gift.

I wonder how many orders they lose because people are concerned that the disc may not make it in time for the wedding.

I think I have that one but I don't remember paying $10 for it. I will have to look it up and see but the name sounds familiar like I used it before.

I don't get it - where are you getting songs that cost $10 per download??

At that price why don't you just buy the CD and then sell it after the event too recoup some of the cost?

Someone gave me a latin artist's CD once and told me I could keep it. I knew I'd never use it again so I listed it online and got $16 for it!

Last month I needed a song for a Bat Mitzvah. The CD was in very limited distribution and there was no time to order and receive one. So, I contacted the artist directly, told them what I was doing - and asked if there was a way I could get an MP3? They emailed it to me free of charge.

These artists frequently do not have a CD to sell. Many just have a single song on a website for download, and they charge $10 to DL it. ( or have it emailed ).

As Bob mentioned, I've also never seen a song that costs $10 to download.

Although, if you'd like a cut from my upcoming album, I can give you a special deal for $10 per song (which includes the Brooklyn Bridge deed as well) :sqwink:

1) The times I've been asked for songs such as this are typically last minute. Even IF I wanted the cd, it wouldn't make it in time.

2) I don't think I could find a buyer for it.

As an old timer and a "pre-internet" dj ....

Spending $15-$20 for a cd to find a single song was pretty common place back in the 80s and 90s.

Now that it is a "download"... spending $10 seems outlandish.

I think we have all gotten spoiled on cheap music.

Psst: If anyone asks - you didn't here it from me.

Carter left open a pretty simple way to download his songs for free.

The least you could do is give him a link back to his site!
