DBX GoRack Config

they take the tops with them. Had this happen once before - anyone know why even the sub manual says to pass the signal to the sub first and then pass through the top. Why would they recommend this when the failure mode is to cut off the signal going through it? Anyway, been playing with the unit in my office/studio and the dbx GoRack seems to be just what I need. I am impressed so far. I do have a Behringer DEQ2496 & Cal mic which is a pretty powerful Digital EQ plus much more but it is way too complicated to use when you just want to get up and running quickly in a mobile environment. The dbx is not as capable in some areas but it is a great quick and dirty sound shaper when you don't want to spend scads of time tweaking in an empty room and then apply corrections when the room fills up. Yeah I could do presets but again I want something simple and easy to use. I think this may do the trick. The preset curves seem very well thought out and it is a quick and dirty sound correction capability me thinks....
So far so good. I really want to see how good the antifeedback and sub synth work on a bigger system. My desktop monitors (Mackie CR3) are too small until I get a sub for them (coming soon)....

If the subs take the tops with them (when they fail or if powered off) it's probably because there is an active high-pass xover in the subs going to the tops. If you run the signal to the tops first, they will be running full range, unless they also have a high-pass filter on their inputs.

Watch that "sub harmonic synth" at high levels - those things eat woofers for breakfast (lunch and dinner) in one bite. In addition, if you run the signal to the tops first, they are also getting the "sub harmonic" boost. Caution.

Here is the back of my tops (EV ELX112P) which does have a 100 Hz high pass setting (with sub) which I use when married to a sub. I use the full pass output(called link output) to the sub which works great. Just wondering why all the manuals I read say plug into the sub first and then pass through to the tops - clearly not the way to go in this case. Behringer should make it clear in their manual that the "full range" through connection goes down when powered off or in a fault condition...
Am happy with the arrangement - it just irks me that the manuals have it wrong in this case I believe....

I would leave crossover duty in the sub .. run the dbx to the sub, use the appropriate output (that uses the High Cut filter) .. adjust the high cut for the tops (usually 110Hz or so for a 12" top) and set the EV to "with sub".

Navydiver, couple questions -

You run one or two subs?

You run them clustered or splayed with the tops?

I would also suggest moving this, or starting a similar thread in the "DJ Gear" forum to get more bodies involved.

I almost always run to sub (ELX118) first and then to top (ELX112 or QSC K12) - looks neater imo. The 'with sub' just cuts anything below 100 to the tops. It should not matter the order you plug them in.

That said: If the speaker you are passing through (sub or top) goes down, the next one in line will not get the signal.

That depends .. most "thru" jacks are hardwired, so they should still pass signal on a failure, so his sub "thru" should be guaranteed .. not so sure about the top's "link" out. Therefore, going to the sub first (and out the thru - which does bypass the xover) looks to be the only way to guarantee each gets a signal if the other fails.
