Would you use a Subwoofer at this wedding reception?

Would you bring a subwoofer out for this wedding, or perform without one?

I am debating wether I should bring a sub or not for this Saturday :scratchhead: I have a wedding this upcoming Saturday for 105 people for 5 hours. I am setting up my Bose S1 Pro for cocktail hour out in the hallway area outside of the ballroom. They have a short 45 minute cocktail hour.

For the reception this couple does not want any Hip Hop music played. Basically nothing with sex or profanity in it. They have a lot of country, and Christian music along with some oldies picked out. Lots of older folks are going to be in the crowd. Lots of older uncles, Aunts Grand Parents etc. I am also dedicating a bunch of slow songs through out the night to close family members...I am going to end up playing 8 dedicated slow songs, PLUS an Anniversary dance which is a slow song. So 9 slow songs at this wedding at a minimum is going to be played.

The ballroom is a nice size and easily holds the 105 people comfortably.

My question for you is: Would you bring a Subwoofer for this wedding or just use a pair of tops?
 
What is the model of sub you will be using? Does it have settings in the back to set the proper sound for the event so it's not too overwhelming? Bass is nice if used properly for the right music and you said the ballroom is a nice size room. Some rooms you don't need bass because of the size of the room as you know because it would be too much. You don't want people to keep telling you to turn it down.
 
Subwoofers aren't just for hip-hop, or for fast songs, or for young people.

Subwoofers do help your top speakers handle the workload, and replicate frequencies that your top speakers just aren't equipped to handle. They also help fill the room with sound, so that you don't have to jack up the volume so much - those older folks will appreciate that they're not fatigued from your "tops-only" presentation.

Use subs.

The speakers I use are a line array with sub system that requires the sub. So I don't have a choice unless I switch to just tops, which I only do when I'm forced to.

That being said, agree with the above. Put your best product out. Even when I think nobody will notice, I feel best when I'm doing work I'm proud of.

Alto TS212S 12" Sub with a pair of 12" Alto tops, or 10" Alto tops...I have not decided yet on which tops I will use. My 12s are newer, and nicer looking, and have way more power, but I haven't used my 10s yet this year, and kinda itching to use them.

Let me say this. First off that sub is an Alto sub that's rated at 1250 watts. I would say that peak. So I would say at 8 ohms it's 650 watts maybe. So it has nice reviews for that sub and the price. So that sub has really nice bass. My guess is the bass isn't as deep as other subs costing much more. First I say what's the size of the room? If it's not that big and 105 people attending the wedding, then 2 tops should be fine. Now just because you're only using 2 tops if that's all you plan to use doesn't mean you have to go crazy with the volume. As long as it's loud enough for people to enjoy themselves and don't have to scream to talk then you should be fine. Now if you use the sub doesn't mean the bass needs to be thundering bass that the windows are shaking. You don't have to turn the sub up but so loud. Of course you know this long as you've been in business.
 
It really depends which country and Christian music they have picked out. Some of this stuff really crosses over into other genres. Many oldies don't have a lot of low energy because they were recorded for vinyl where strong base could cause needles to skip.

Subs can be a problem for those that are hard of hearing. However, you can always have them hooked into the system and adjust them as you see fit during the event. Better to have it and not use it than to not have it and wish you did. I suspect you won't need it though.

Just bring it with you in case you need to use it.

Are subs needed for this gig? No, I don't think they are. Will it push your buttons to have a sub? Weigh the trouble it is versus how much you'll enjoy it and then decide. Personally, I carried a full rig, with subs to every gig in the past. During the past couple of seasons I've only been taking a pair of 12s and now I'm wondering "What in the world was I thinking? This is so much easier."

I say if needed. Some events no sub is needed. We did an event in the smallest room we've ever done an event in. There was barely room for anything. If 30 people would have been in that room, the Fire Marshall would have been called.
