It must be time for me to retire soon. I'm going up against people in my area that:

1. advertise price of wedding - $300-500 (Canadian)
2. Have been "rocken" since 2005 (never mind that the logo says EST. 2025)
3. setup consist of a bare table, milk crate covered with two towels and fancy speaker with built in lights
4. flashy website listed as website.com

How can I compete with this? ;)

Why would a professional consider this competition?
Are we not directing our attention to serious events that require fully professional engagement?

Someone like this is a valuable constant reminder that the underlying basis of what we do is amplify per-recorded music. That's it - just a PC and a speaker is enough to meet the requirement. Thank you DJ Double Mint for your constant advocacy and advancement message.

If we want to make a commercial business out of playing music tracks then we damn well better be prepared to add a substance and value capable of meeting a broad set of elevated requirements in the potential event space.

DJ Dumble Door is probably killing it in the 50 person social market and VFW Halls.

I like more of a challenge.

How about this? For those who were a DJ in 20005 what did your setup look like and what were you charging to do a wedding if you were into doing weddings back then?

Speaking of 2005, I was thinking about 2005 while at work today.

Would you rather live in USA in the year 2005, or USA in the year 2025? I honestly would take 2005. I feel it was a far brighter time to live in America considering well just about everything.

You would intentionally go back to 3 years before the worst financial crisis since the depression on purpose? I was in college in 05, so I was certainly having more fun.

YES! 2005 USA seemed far more "Normal" like more like actual USA. Cost of Living was still very affordable. People said hello to each other. People generally drove more sane out on the road ways even though we were experiencing the "Fast N Furious" car scene out on the roadways at the time, generally speaking in every day commuting people drove better. People generally were not nearly as stressed out. FAR LESS WEED was being smoked out in public. It was barely existent back then compared to today. Younger people were bright, in good moods, laughed, and socialized A LOT. These young people today have a lot of social problems and depression :(

People were generally still having kids. New Tech seemed innovate and positive, and computers were cool, but we weren't glued to devices all the time. I could go on and on about how 2005 felt a lot better than 2025 as an American living in USA.

The only difference I experience on the up side personally is I am actually working less today than I was in 2005 all in, and I have more weekends off compared to back then. I was working double shifts as a waiter plus deejaying, and my bro and I paid $1,440 a month rent for an apartment. I had a car payment for my 94 Firebird Formula muscle car. My cars today are both paid off. Electric bill was CHEAP though, it was like $67 a month for us back then. Today my wife and I split a 1K mortgage, but the electric/gas bill I pay is like $400+ a month and probably rising to a median $450+ a month in another year at the rate of increases over the last 3 years.

Health insurance was actually CHEAP in 2005. Today it is becoming unsustainable. Groceries were VERY CHEAP compared to now. Alcohol was cheap at the stores and at restaurants/bars. Not any more. I will also add that it seemed like people had a little more patriotism in them back then compared to today. Politics weren't nearly as divided. Our government is completely dysfunctional today. It wasn't good 20 years ago, but it was a good bit better than now. I could go on and on about why 2005 was generally a better time

In 2005 I made $75,000 2025 between all sources of income should be just over 4 times that

What does I wonder what he was charging in 2005 have to do with today and you? I remember Taso just posted he started in 2005. He has improved light years from when he first started. There's nothing wrong with learning from someone else. That's fine. At the end of the day where are you at?

It's hard for me to compare because I was in such a different place in life. I was 20 and still in school. DJing weddings on weekends making $500-$600ish a night, which felt like a ton of cash when all of my friends were broke college kids. That slice of life had a lot of great friends and memories, but the part that came right after that got rough.

The "Would you go back in time" game all depends on what knowledge you get to take back with you. Would I play my hand differently with knowledge of the future? Certainly. But if I was going back just to re-live the fairly painful early years of my career again, pass. They were formative and I survived to fight another day, but I don't have any desire to go through it again.
