What would you do if you caught Pneumonia and an event to DJ on Saturday?

You catch Awful Pneumonia on Sunday, and have a big event on Saturday to do. What would you do?

  • I will cancel out on the event on Monday/Tuesday, return the deposit, and tell client to find new DJ

  • I will tell client I have Pneumonia Monday/Tuesday but PROMISE to put a replacement DJ on the event

  • I won't tell the client anything. No Matter what I am going to DJ the event even if I am still sick!

Let's say, you start getting sick on Sunday. Have breathing problems along with coughing, and decide to go to the ER. You are at the ER, and they tell you that you have Pneumonia. They give you antibiotics to take for the week, and send you home. You have a big event to DJ on Saturday. What would you likely do if this happened to you?
 
I think a week is more than enough time to get better.
(or, at least well enough to do the gig)
But, if it was bad enough that I was not going to recover in time,
I would call a friend to cover it.

Pneumonia likely would not be enough time to recover. Not any where near 100%. MAYBE well enough to do the gig physically, but probably coughing your lung out still, especially for someone over age 50/55. For Bacterial Pneumonia, once you start taking the antibiotics, you are not contagious after 48 hours of taking the antibiotics at least. For Viral Pneumonia, you would be contagious for quite some time

My brother got Double Pneumonia about a decade ago. He was in his 40s at the time. He said it took him 6 weeks to recover, and his ribs hurt for over 30 days.
 
I've never had pneumonia but have DJ'ed with the flu and one time a day after getting out of the hospital for kidney stone surgery. There are times where sometimes you have to push yourself. In the case of pneumonia, I'd be looking for a sub. As a very last resort I'd refund their money and cancel, giving them as much time as possible to get a replacement.

We don't "catch" pneumonia. It's a complication of failing to readily or properly address another ailment. If we reach that point - then we have already failed to do what was required long before it became a "crisis."

Working while ill or injured in any way is a social and behavioral question. Are we compromised in our ability to perform our duties to the expected standard? Are we infectious to other people? If the answer to either of those questions is YES then we have an ethical responsibility that needs to be taken seriously. This is also valid when we are perfectly healthy but, perhaps psychologically not present - such as immediately after the death or funeral of a family member.

Most often we can get ourselves healthy or medicated enough to perform our jobs because advanced scheduling is on our side. But then there's last minute injuries or things we have little or no control over and for that - we need advanced planning and a network of reliable associates who can help us protect our client's long laid plans.

Hopefully don't get sick. Yet if you do and it's serious enough then I say either contact another DJ and see if they can cover the event. This I say would depend on how long you've been in business and how many DJs you're friends with. The last resort would be to refund the clients money and hope they can find another DJ that can do the event.

Let me ask if anyone has been sick and iwas unable to an event? How did you handle the situation?

Twice I paid DJs considerably more than the contracted rate to cover the gigs, but normally I have trusted associates that can help
