I just got a call from my partner. He's playing in the Pop Up Shop in Elizabeth, NJ. He was doing a grand reopening. Someone like the house music he was playing. He called me to tell me Someone wanted him to do something. He told me it's in Atlanta Georgia. They have to contact him so he can get more info.

He tells me he was going to tell them $900. I tell him he can do it himself. He tells me I will be there with him. I told him I wasn't coming for $900. I would have to do all the driving because he doesn't have his license back.

So I told him I would do it for $1,500. I didn't tell him that's the starting price and we would need a hotel room for 2 days.

I live in East Orange, NJ. Again I don't have any details yet about the event they want us to come there to do. So I can't say a thing yet. So if you were considering doing this event what would be your starting price? Just asking for now. Please no beating me up for makimg this thread. I was tired and planned on staying home till I go to pick up my rider. When I heard that I got up to make a meeting.

I rarely get asked to travel and well, no thanks.

First, you get $700 to DJ for 4 hours say. OK, that in reality takes you what, 7 hours, with setup, travel, etc. and you may want to leave early for traffic or getting lost, eating lunch, etc.

now to do a show 1000 miles away you gotta be there the day before, so food, hotel, gas, etc. AND pay for the DAY spent traveling. You can't 'do' anything the day of the event...like you can at home, so 4 hours, er, 7 or more like 12. THen you finish at 11 or whatever and you're not driving back...so another hotel, more food, and another day paid for driving.

So 2100? More?

Why YOU (or him?) Friend? Or celebrity? Kickin' me some biz is nice, but they 're gonna shell out there for just that. So that leaves, what, celebrity? YOU, your name, brings in more people, improves the event?

Then THAT in and of itself is worth more then your normal fee.

$900? LOL Your partner isn't very smart, and TERRIBLE with math.

Atlanta, GA is easily 4 - 5 tanks of fuel to drive down, and back. So first, figure out your fuel expenses. Then you gotta be paid for travel time which should be at least $250 each. Then the client needs to pay for your hotel room for 2 nights, and not a cheap ass motel...Something decent.

If he wants to charge $900 for the event itself, that is fine, but then add $500 for travel time, $350-$400 for the hotel room, and $200 to $300 to cover fuel expenses. You are at $1,950 to $2,100. ...And that is cheap to be honest! I wouldn't travel down to ATL for $2,100 even for a 4 hour event...and I'm like 3 hours less of a drive each way than you are lol

I have no desire to travel that for to do an event though...if I did, I'm making a get away trip out of it, and staying down there for 3-4 nights, and would need at least $4,000 with a paid hotel room for 2 nights, or charge $400 extra for the hotel.

I should clarify in my previous post... I would require hotel stay for my assistant and I... and that would be the base for sound only. Chances are if it’s a wedding they’d want extras. For a wedding in January I charged $6000 in Florida, and they then added another $1000 of enhancements. It’ll cost me $600-$700 in gas, $50 in tolls, and my assistant will make $750 for the weekend. Overall a profit of $5500 for one event. (Hotel covered by clients separately)

It's 900 miles from NJ to Atlanta and in the range of $150-$200 for a nice hotel. Even a Red Roof is $100 and you better calculate 4 nights because it's really a 2 day drive each way Before I price the event itself it's $2600 and that isn't including meals. If you charge $1500 take off $700 or so for gas plus incidentals and a few meals you might clear $500 between you for 4 days on the road. At $900 you will lose money

My question would be, What are you going to use for transportation? you'll need something reliable

Thanks for your post but I wouldn't loose s*** because I wouldn't do it. Even if it was just me I wouldn't do it for that price.

I have my van that is paid for. Also let me say I was just talking to my partner when he called. Nobody has called him yet, so there are ndetails about the event. Which I would need all the details for the event before I would quote a price. I was just throwing out a number. Thanks all for saying to look for the client to pay for our hotel stay. If not that would be added to the price.

A grand re-opening for what? Playing house music at most grand openings would not go over well.
It was a mixture of music and not just house music. Also why is it that an event with house music wouldn't work? If that's what the client wanted then that's what they would get.

Mix, I think you're the only one on these boards who says they consistently play house music. That makes for a very small niche of events.
Again it's about what the client wants and can we provide what they want. If we can't then pass it on to someone else that can provide what that client is looking for.

I love house music.. it’s what got me into djing. However, that won’t make me very profitable if that’s all I played or had knowledge in.
