I'm asking this question because my friend who sold me a bunch of gear is a big fan of JBL and I have 4 sets of Yamaha speakers. We both have great sounding speakers for sure. He tells me what I have is great and I tell him the same thing. I joke with him about trading. Of course he won't trade with me. He's happy with what he uses and so am I just. Just looking to have some fun here. There's no wrong answer here and please don't bust peoples chops on here for what they are using. Some just might be starting out and can't afford what you have or know the difference. Have a wonderful day. Oh on a side note a salesman in GC tried to get me to buy a pair of the cheap Alto black powered speakers. I wouldn't even give them a listen. I bought a pair of Yamaha DSR 15 speakers and so far after years of use no issues with them performing. Work great every time.

Being old school, I shall interpret this as "like"!

As both you and your friend have realized, there are many brands of excellent speakers - so I will answer this as to speaker configuration, not brand. IMHO, a pair of 10" or 12" two way tops paired with a pair of 15" or 18" subs provides the best sound, the most flexibility, and biggest bang for the buck for a mobile DJ - active or passive. It eliminates the need for tripods, looks pretty good, and can sound very good. Those of you with deep pockets can do no better than the quasi-line source RCF tops Ross runs. (Correction - Taso. Mix is not the only one old age is screwing with!!)

I have been a strong adversary of 15" two way tops, here and elsewhere. Admittedly, since the advent of DSP (with powered speakers), they have gotten better, but they still fall short with a weak bass and compromised mid-range. Those of you who use them are fighting the "Laws of Physics", a term many dislike, but true none the less. Please remember that when I refer to bass, I'm not talking "Loud", I'm talking "Low".

It seems like the ideal LINE-SOURCE speaker for DJ'ing has yet to be produced, the biggest issues seeming to be bass, and the height of the column. In the quest for light weight and easy portability, too many sacrifices. Bose users trying all combinations of B1, B2, F1 subs, while others are supplementing their line sources with additional active subs - all which defeats the concept of easy setup and less stuff to carry, not to mention expense - and still will never hit like a pair of 18" subs.

As Handinon eloquently said, there are configurations that tend to be more ideal for DJing. Personally, I dislike 15" or double 15" tops .. not big enough for sub-bass and too big for quality midrange. I would only recommend a 15" 2-way top if subs were not an option .. and I would NEVER recommend double 15 tops unless doing live sound work .. just not the right tool for a DJ.

From there a lot depends on coverage pattern. A 10/12" top will generally have a 75-90 degree horn versus a line array style system, which might have 130 degree coverage. The 75/90 horn will keep more energy in a tighter pattern and will "throw" further than the line array and might be more useful in managing reflective sound by being able to be angled away from window or hard stone walls. The line array units will generally cover a broader area (beneficial in many places) and tend to have more consistent loudness through the area of coverage. The downside on many is they need to crossover higher than 10/12" top, so the sub unit has more frequency band to cover.

I think the 2 setups ... 12" over 18" sub or 10" over 15" sub .. or a line array (Bose L1, EVOX, EV Evolve, etc) are ideal mobile setups and having both types gives a bit of flexibility.

Taso's system is a blend of both, with a hard hitting 18" sub under a larger column speaker (RCF NXL) which pulls the crossover point a bit lower.

I'd like my next speaker purchase to be the JBL VRX system. Have to rent them currently, but one taste and there's no going back.

No one will be shocked to hear I still love my l1's. Been using model 2's mostly with s1 pro's for smaller projects. Compacts and model 1's still get use.
For me they've been the best balance of size, sound, and reliability. Easy to move while sounding great. I can't really say how they compare to other speakers as I've been so happy with them, I haven't compared much.

While they are the right system for me, they are not perfect and plenty of other great options out there

I have no interest in the f1's
While I use the b2's for larger crowds/school dances, for typical wedding sizes we do 150-250, the b1's are more than fine for what I need. The b2's in plus mode is too much bass, in my opinion, but the DJ's that feel more bass is always good bass love it.

Everyone knows that the best speaker out there is the ION Party Rocker!!! :headbang:

It comes with a Light show, microphone, is batter powered, sound SWEET, and you can DJ on it from any where with a DJ App on your phone wirelessly! You don't have the cream of the crop unless you are rockin' out with the ION Party Rocker!!!! And if Amazon say's it's their choice, you know it's a legit best ever product! :)

It's batter powered? What kinda batter? Pancake batter? Or did you mean a MBL batter? ;)

I am not sure, but I think it's Chinese Butter Cookie batter powered. I am assuming that because it's made in China! But that explains why it sounds so awesome, and is the best speaker out there! :)

Personally for me I'm a high fan. When it comes to speakers I love good clean highs for the tops. Before I bought subs I first had a pair of Peavey Sp2-g speakers and they worked well for the events we did at the time. Later on I bought a pair of JBL JRX 1W5 speakers and I eventually sold them. I then bought a pair of Yamaha S215 speakers and I still have them today. I've had some that wanted to buy them from me but I was talked out of getting rid of them. If I could get at least one pair of Yamaha C215 speakers then I would sell them.

Given the speakers you’ve bought, that doesn’t jibe.

I am very partial to EV speakers. At the moment I own 4 active 2 ZLX 12p and ELX 200 10p, 16 passive QRX 112sx4, QRX 153s x4, ZX5sx4, Zx1s pair and Live X 200 12s pair. 10 total EV dual 18s 4 QRX 218s 6 Phoenix EV PX2181 to be specific. I also have a couple of light duty to me at least JBL VRX 918s. And a pair of QSC E10s EV are my favorite as well as passive. Actives for me are just for ceremonies and cocktail hours. Small rig I use is 2 EV ELX 200 12 passives or QSC E10s over JBL VRX 918s. Medium sized ZX5s over QRX 218s a pair total or a pair per side. Big rig 153s over Phoenix Subs
