IE 8 really isn't all that bad, I just worry about security with all that issues previous versions had. @Ducky: Check out that Gmail accelerator for IE 8. http://ie.microsoft.com/activities/en-en/Default.aspx. I'm guessing accelerators are IE's version of addons and might help Gmail work better in IE.
