After you have set up your gear. What Song/CD do you use to check out the sound from your speakers (Audio Check)?
I use "Caravan" by Wynton Marsalis. Its a cut from his "Standards" album. Lots of separate highs, mids and lows.

I must be the only one who uses Primus or Tool.

young...

A disadvantage to using Primus or Tool for testing equipment is the loudness wars as explained here:

YouTube - The Loudness War but to each his/her own. You will learn so basics in high fidelity right through that video. There is a reason why stereo hi-fi high end shops often play stuff such as jazz music, classical music, Dark Side of the Moon, Steely Dan music, etc. to get you to buy equipment.

Ok so I guess I forgot to use my smilies. I will throw on some Primus but that is just because I love them. Usually to test my system I listen to Sarah Mclaughlan, the piano and voice are just so natural and clean sounding.

Sara McLachlan is usually decent for audio testing, I agree.

Johnny & Mary

I also used to use "Johnny & Mary" by Robert Palmer in my Vinyl days. Back in the early 80's when I lived in an apartment, I had a downstairs neighbor who used to irritate the heck out of me with his loud scratchy music. To retaliate I would fire up my rig and play Johnny & Mary. The loud rumbling bass line used to drive him nuts! LOL You can barely hear the low bass line here: YouTube - Robert Palmer - Johnny and Mary
For some reason this link does not play. Do a search for "Johnny & Mary" by Robert Palmer and see if the UTube link comes up. Try it there.

Dan Fogelberg-Netherlands The strings are exquisite.

Travis its actually Sexual Healing

Once Im tuned in I dust out the subs with Pantera- Cowboys From Hell
and Sugar Ray's Street Machine

Holy crap...I used to love the song Johnny And Mary. Completely forgot about it. Damn, if I wasn't already in bed I'd dig that puppy up. Will do it for sure once the kids are on the bus in the morning. Thanks for the memory.

As for my test song...I Feel Love, the Blue Man Group version.

You take your lappy to bed? :sqlaugh:

I like the old version of lagrange by zz top, prior to it's re-mastering... but for clarity and wide range of frequency levels, you can't beat sirius / eye in the sky by alan parson's project, or garth brooks the dance... it's so quiet, then crisp and in your face.. if you want to find a hum or hiss, that's your song...

it was mastered so cleanly that you almost hear no noise before the piano kicks in, and the vocals are so rich that if that song sounds good, I know everything's dialed in...

Josie by steely dan is another good one...

and of the famous "Super producer" bands will be a good choice.. they don't produce everyone and their grandmother's albums for nothing!
