I think those bars just look tacky. Took a really clean design and gave it unnecessary lines

I’m inclined to agree.[emoji4] Like Steve said, the best thing about it is no tripod legs sticking out. Just not sure that get’s it past the ugly.[emoji1]

There isn't a right answer. Even the multiple totem-with-mover look is getting cliche. For the markets we hit, not sure it matters all that much and if it makes load-ins/outs easier .. go for it.

You could be right about that too. That’s why I asked “What’s Next”? The movers on totems look has been around for a while, and might be running its course... I dunno???[emoji1] Problem is; I haven’t seen anybody doing something new that looks as good or better. Maybe WE can think of something??? Any ideas???[emoji4]

The next new thing will probably be DJs flying Drones right above the dance floor with mini moving heads pointed directly onto the floor that are wireless DMX Controlled. :)

As far as setting up 2 laptops. I did that this past Saturday, and glad that I did set up both of my Laptops. I was playing the 3rd to last song of the night, and when I went to mix into the 2nd to last song of the night (I went to load the song on Deck 2, and VDJ froze up on me. It literally stopped the music, and exited out of VDJ. The whole crowd went "AWWW"

...I quickly moved to my other laptop, and hit play on what I had loaded up on there. I happened to have "The Way you make me feel" by MJ loaded. Had been loaded on that laptop for probably 3 hours, and was never played. ...So within 2 seconds I had a song playing.

That sucked! But it really wasn't that bad, and the crowd started dancing from where they left off. ...I think that is only the 3rd time I have ever had VDJ freeze on me. This is the new 2018 version...First time for this version.

the totems may be getting standard... but when set up properly, they create a very clean streamlined look. Also, they're only standard amongst the mid-high tier dj setups, meaning the avg guest still does not see them too often depending on who their circle of friends hire. The other thing with them is, you don't even need to put them by the dj booth... you can even put them in the corners for the room as they don't look out of place.

I’m pretty sure I’m gonna continue to have two computers setup and running concurrently no matter whatever else I do. It adds very little weight and setup time, so it just makes no sense not to do it. Having a controller that has dual USB inputs is another thing that makes sense.[emoji4]

It may be getting dated , but I really like the movers on totems look, paired with some wash light. I do agree with Taso here, when set up properly is a very clean and streamlined look.

yeah... the only people deciding any of this is cliche is us....i still see dj gig logs on youtube with guys rocking a mini kinta strapped to one speaker pole and a derby on the other one...or one chinese mover sitting on a table...... and the crowds having a blast... lol...

i truly hope we can settle on something as a quality light show and let it last a while... the only people winning this war are the manufacturers...

True, but the fact is; pretty much like everything else in life, things change. Nobody (except maybe @ChuckTheDJ) still wears the same suit they wore 10 years ago... We change cars because the styles change. Some of us change our hair styles. Not me... I still have the same hair style I had in High School.[emoji1]... Oh, but I did have a perm in the early 90’s. But I digress.[emoji1]... My point is; things are gonna change. I’m trying to figure out What’s Next?

You look at @djtaso... his setup keeps evolving. You look back at some of his earlier setups, and a LOT of DJ’s would be thrilled to have one of those setups today. I think his new CLEAN and elegant (almost minimalist) look is cool. Is that the new thing? Is the industrial look with exposed truss and black everything passé? My feeling is; if you can’t predict what’s coming next, do something different your own self, and it might actually start a trend.[emoji1]

I don’t wanna be one of THOSE guys. I’ve been that already.[emoji1] I try to keep upping my game every year.

I get why lighting manufacturers keep changing things up. They can’t stand pat on products for too long. When sales start to decline on one product, you better have another one ready to go, or you go out of business. A DJ can choose how long he/she sticks with a lightshow... as long as the lights still work and/or replacements or parts can still be acquired.

I'm sticking with my no hair style ... I assume it's a trend I started.

....because I no longer do weddings, as well as approaching 72 years old, everything is modular. The heaviest/largest thing I deal with are my 15" subs @ 42 pounds. My DIY console sits on a black fabric covered folding table, high enough I can stand/dance behind it - I never sit. However, the true Litmus Test is it all must fit in only the trunk and back seat of a regular passenger car, lights included - nothing in the passenger seat - and that it sound good. That's really the only two requirements!

FMI (for my information), what state and city do you live?

What if I made some totems that fit on the top of a pair of white EVOX-J8's, and mounted a white moving head light on the top of each totem??? Something like this...

View attachment 35332

... Not sure if the weight of the EVOX-8 base unit would be enough to keep the totem from being too top heavy???
I wonder if one of these would be a good place to start ... Novopro PS1XL White Variable Height Podium Stand with 2 different scrims - (https://www.idjnow.com/novopro-ps1xl-white-podium-stand.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwjIHeBRAnEiwAhYT2h3UYZiFsVPW1pg97XteNUtfssFWPh9o_NdrBrkEzhWl9SDlDPDJSAxoC7K4QAvD_BwE#0)

Might have to fab a new bottom plate to match the sub dimension and then figure how to clamp it to the sub pole for stability. Scrim it and the top even gets hidden. Could go all black instead of white.

That's a VERY COOL Totem... Never seen it before. However, I'm thinkin' I like the curved lines in my design. Obviously, I'm gonna have to have it fabricated if I build this thing. I don't have the tools or skills to do it myself, but there are places around town that can do it. And you're right; it has to have a bottom plate the same size as the width of the base unit of the EVOX-8. Here's a deconstructed view of kinda how I see it fitting together...

1539363844698.png

... A closer look shows how the sub pole would screw the bottom section of the totem to the EVOX-8...

1539363956138.png

.... then you'd attach the top section of the totem, sliding it over the top of the speaker. The cool thing is, the sub pole on the EVOX-8 SCREWS in... doesn't just slide in like with a lot of subs, so it could help secure the totem to the base unit.

Would need to be the older (our) style units. The new J8/JMix8 don't have flat tops unfortunately.

But if you did fab it, the base plate could be say 8" wider than the sub and then bent over 3.75" on each side to keep it from moving.

Yeah... I see what you mean... it’s a little lower in the back. I still think the totem could be made so the back poles are slightly longer to compensate for the slanted top of the EVOX-J8 base unit.

... And maybe some thin hard rubber feet under the base plate to kinda shim it from wobbling.

i really dig this concept!!

if you are going through the trouble of fabricating a special totem.... why not have someone 3d print a plate that lays on top of the sub...touching/filling the topography on top of the sub in key areas and creating a flat base on top
