99% of my inquires come by text, email or FB. NOBODY wants to talk on the phone anymore, at most any age not just millenials.

How do you get business?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :sunny:
I still run passive gear to. Still using my old DJM5000 mixer.
I don't text, skipe, FB i tunes tweet, nothin. When my phone rings I answer it. When I want to communicate I'll call you.
Besides texting on an old flip phone sucks. I can still take the battery out of my phone and make it untraceable.
It will hold a charge for a week. Bet you can't do that with a smart phone with all those aps running all the time.
My music PC is an old windows 7 thats about 15 maybe 20 years old. But it still works. The one I'm on now is windows 10 thats only about 2 years old.
I'm not PC save" But thankfully, I have a nephew that is. He works PC security for the government. Next time he comes down I'll get him to fix me up.
Setting up a dj program would be easy for him.

You can TRY and live 'off grid' but good luck with that.

Besides your phone and on-star, ALL cars record data though not all upload it.
Our town got a grant to put in cameras - EVERY intersection, with the capablity of reading license plates (it's a pa thing now, most cop cars can do it, all will soon), it can follow your car around town AND has facial recognition.

And this is a town with 4500 residents, that is the 8th safest (crime wise( in PA and 56th safest in the entire USA.

Plus stores record you, your credit card/debit card, when/where you access the internet, etc.

And I've heard that the NSA listens/records/tracks ALL cell phone conversations. And even if you're on a landline, I bet the person you're talking to isn't.

And of course my laptop and software goes online - gotta get music, check in here, etc.

Does your car have on-stare? It to is tracing your car. Where it goes, how fast are you going, what direction your traveling. Cops can now take that the livens plate number and get your vin number and they can have on star turn you car off if your running from them. It doesn't actually turn it off, it just makes it so you can go anymore. The motor will still run so you don't lose your breaks or power staring but you can push on the gas and it wont go. I have several family members that are cops and they all say it works. Only if they have the right plate number so they can get the right vin. If you change the plate or remove it then that can't get the vin.
But on star also bulk collects your cars movements, so that can find out where your car was and when it was there and how long it was there.
They also trace you by you using your credit card, what you bought, where you bought it when you bought it. This is also bulk collected.
Does you home have a smart meter? They know everything about your power usage day and night. They are also putting smart chips in your home appliances, you refrigerator, dish washer, washing machine, dryer A/C and heating units. This is also bulk collected. They know when you turn things on and off. This is done for many reasons. Not to spy on you but to track your usage so when power starts to peak and a brown out may happen they can reduce your power usage to protect the grid. But the point is everything electronically operated is starting to be bulk tracked and stored.
Do you have an Alexia in your home? That you can simply ask it a question and it will give you the information? It's listing to every word you say all day every day. It can be hacked and someone can hear every word you say in your home and It's programed for key words to listen for. That info is also being bulk collected. The point is all the things we use everyday without thinking about them are spying or can be used to spy on you.
Wali down the street and there are cameras everywhere just watching. With facial recognition they can track you. Ever use ez tag to run toll roads? Facial recognition is being used to see your face behind the wheel.
You think this is paranoia but it real and it happening more and more all the time.
Ever see the movie, Enemy of the state? That kind of technology is closer then you think.Give it another 20 years' There are thousands of dedicated spy privet and government satellites watching and collecting data every day on everything that is traceable.
I know you gonna say your just being paranoid, but it's happening more and more every day. The day is coming when we will have no privacy at all.
Big brother is gearing up and it's only a mater of time. Red light cameras, speed trap cameras. Cops sitting on the side of the road have livens plat recognition soft wear that constantly see and run plate numbers to aid them in finding cars that may have an APB on them or the driver may have a warrant. It's coming.

I can receive text. But I never text back. I simply call the number that is attached to the text. I've tried texting. And most times you spend too much time bouncing text back and forth many times to get to the point and agree on something. Have you ever tried texting on a flip phone? Or reading a text on a flip phone? I can spend 30 min bouncing text back and forth or I can call and get the same results in 2 min. I see people spending hours a day just texting messages back and forth. They live there life attached to a device and are constantly checking email and text and Fb messages that take up hours of there time. I work for a living and having to stop and drop what I am doing to play with my phone is not for me. It waste my time.
Whats so wrong with actually calling and talking to someone? Text, emai and FB are so impersonal.

Just the other day I was looking for a new TV I called best buy but they wouldn't answer the phone so I got on the internet and started chatting with someone about if the TV I wanted was in stock. It took 45 min bouncing back and forth just to find out if one was in stock at my local store.
I called Walmart and they actually answered the phone and I asked if the tv was in stock. The person walked over to the electronics section and said yes we have that one in stock and I'm looking at it right now. Took all of about 3 min for a person to answer the phone and give me the information vs 45 min on the internet chatting with someone that wasn't even at the store. Best buy said it was in stock and it was closer then Walmart so on my way to wall mart I stopped in and the tv I wanted ws not in stock like the person that wasn't even there just checked there inventory list. So I drove on to Walmart and there it was sitting on the shelf, just like the person I talked to and actually physically checked to make sure.
So 45 min of chatting got me no where a 3 min actually talking with someone got me what I wanted.
45 min and still no tv vs 3 imn and I walked out with a new TV in hand. And at a lower price.

I can give example after example of how texting is a waste of time and how a an actual conversation by phone netted better and faster results.
I will return your text by calling you, but I will not text back.
Now both have pro's and con's. If your texting you have proof of what someone said, if your talking on a phone you don't.
I can understand a text can be used discreetly in a board meting when a phone call would be rude. They both have there place.

But texting and emails are time wasters when a actual phone conversation can get you to the point much faster.I want to physically talk and hear the person I'm dealing with. It gives me a better feel for who I am dealing with. It's more personal to actually talk then text.

I see people all the time with there head burred in there phone typing away and getting nothing done.

I sell firewood and bbq wood from my home and make 70K a year doing it. I'm a one man operation. People must call to make sure I'm here to make a sale. If I'm on the road making a delivery and thay show up without calling first, my gate will be locked and they just drove over for nothing.
If they text then I have to stop and pull over to return there text because I will not text and drive. But I can hands free talk on the phone and drive, I don't like to so I keep it short and to the point.
I drove a truck for 30 years so I have the skills to talk on a radio or phone safely while driving. I see people texting behind the wheel everyday even though it's against the law. There at a stop light and it turns green and they just sit there texting and blocking traffic.

If I get a text I'll call back and if there no answer I'll leave a message, and delete the text. Stopping what Im doing to sit and text back and forth is a loss of production when you work with your hands. It's non productive. It's that simple.

Live your life as you like and I'll live mine the way I like. What works for some doesn't work for others.

To a point .. For example, he wouldn't add iTunes capability to his program .. even though EVERY SINGLE OTHER PRODUCT had it .. :)

Do you remove the battery from your car so it stops using gas? Same idea. If you know how your devices work, and you pay attention, you should be able to tell if something isn't right - and that's a red flag. The tools it takes to infect and track smart phones is not cheap nor is it easy. This is not being done in general practice. Laptops don't transmit anything when they're off. Modem .. whats that? There are apps that have a record of where you have been and you can remove those. Your cell provider keeps logs of tower activity - and not your phone.

If you knew half the stuff that Snowden and others know, you would never do anything ever again. Do you have wifi at home or on the road? Do you use the Internet at home? If either of these are yes, the phone is the least of your worries. Using an outdated OS only adds to what people can do with that system. Do you use credit cards? Definitely more valuable information there than a phone. You talk about using an old phone to be 'secure' - but you use an outdated system (Windows 7) that isn't. Additionally, while I understand your logic of a removable battery, if it's an old unsupported phone, then it's more susceptible to being hacked than any smart phone - because its old technology. The reason people like Snowden use burner phones is because he knew he was a target (because of his job) and knew there was potential that he could be hacked.

I use gps in my car but it a used garmon tagged to who ever originally bought it. But like Snowden said if they want to target you bad enough, there are other ways they can do it then through your phone. But the government has allowed phone manufactures to leave a back door that can be used to hack your phone. Your phone can play dead but still be active without you knowing it. You may think it can't be traced if it off, but you are mistaken.
They are more apt to track your credit card activity then your phone. But even if your phone is off don't for a min think it's really off. When you click that I agree button when you sign up for anything did you read the 600 page agreement first. No you didn't. If you did it says at any time they can change the agreement without your knowledge or connect. It's an open contract that they can control. Ever notice if yo google something and then go to your FB you find adds for that same thing you were looking for? Google any product and shop for it on line. then open FB and you will see adds for what you were just looking for. Google tracks your activity and shares it with other companies. No there is very little you can do to be off grid completely, but you can make them work hard for it.
If you have Alexia in your home, you are being spied on 24/7 It's listing to everything you say. Just waiting for you to say key words that will trigger it to listen in. Like face recognition there is voice recognition to.

100% i prefer a phone call. THEY do not call back...I cna leave a message and they'll text and email back. I hate it. 5 min on the phone and done, or 10 messages back and forth and still no certain understanding of what they want.

I can receive text. But I never text back. I simply call the number that is attached to the text. I've tried texting. I went to the pgh car show today with my daughter, a 16 year old learning to drive, so figured she could get a look at everything.

I have an old (05) F350 basic truck. Won't even tell me the temperature. My main ride is a mid-level 14 Outback. No self-driving assistance stuff on it (then it was an option on the top model..$5k upgrade over what I paid).

Twice now I've gotten to drive a new subaru (outback and crosstrek) as dealer loaners - 2019's with 3k miles or so on them, both with Eyesight, subaru's assisted driving system.

Subaru's are pretty tech-simple compared to some..like a 2016 Denali pickup..full screen dash where the 'guages' can be your radio station list, backkup camera and more.

Most all cars at the show had driver assist, apple airplay or android connecitons, built in GPS, no key needed to start/drive/lock the car, just a fob. You can control some of the functions from your phone - tesla is big on that ( you need the app to open your trunk...).

And I'm not talking 80k lexus's...$20k entry level cars were all teched out too. And a lot more is coming. Did you see teh superbowl ad (the 'boston' ad) with the self parking car? You get OUT of the car and park it from your phone (tesla's do this).

Complexity? It can't be avoided anymore.

My take on trying to remove oneself from the "grid" - I have no use for complexity simply for the sake of complexity, but a complex machine, like a BMW, will beat a rickshaw in a race every time.

All the more esay it to steal you car. Most people get out of there car and hit the key fob to lock the car. That key fob sends out a signal, and theves use devices to capture that signal. You walk away and go shopping and the thieves use there device to open and drive away with your car.

My vehicles do not have OnStar - and while this technology is available, there are alot of places it does not work. It works off the Cell Towers. The police cannot have OnStar turn your vehicle off without extreme measures. This would make OnStar part of the police force and they are not. OnStar is also not collecting your vehicle movements. Nothing is being bulk tracked on an individual.

As for Enemy Of The State, that technology won't be here in 20 years .. it was here 30 years ago.

Wow - you took a big leap with all this stuff - with very little factual information. Phone (and other) MFR's do not have a backdoor for the Gov't to use to access anything. I shall bow out of this conversation as it seems you're not interested in learning how stuff actually works. While some older technology is better, newer technology generally crushes whatever it was. If there's something around today that can be hacked and taken advantage of, then whatever is older - is easier to hack and take advantage of.

How do you think on star provides you with gps turn by turn driving instructions? Or how does it know when your airbags have been deployed in an accident and the location when you have benn in an accident? It doesn't work on sat tower like your phone does. It has dedicated sats of its own just like your garmon does. Garman does not use sat towers, it uses sats directly. Thats why they work when your so far off grid you phone doesn't get a signal but your garman still does. My garman uses a max of 5 sat links but can work with a minim of 3 sats to triangulate your location.
You try driving in places where you don't get a phone signal and your phone doesn't work, but your garman does still work and your on star still works.. Your phone is limited to the amount of wattage it can transmit because it's been shown to cause brain damage. On star and garman are not because there not held next to your head, They use higher power wattage so the can work with a sta directly because the use more power. But go ahead and refuse to believe me that thats how it works. Thats your loss, not mine.
I was a over the road truck driver and I have been so far off grid phones don't work but on star and garman gps still does. I've driven every state in the lower 48 and Mexico, and Canada where cell service does not exist because there are no towers close enough to work, but garman gps still does.
And yes cops can use on star to shut your car down. yes they have to use extrema measures but they can and do still use it.

Ever hear of a sat phone? It doesn't use cell towers, It's a direct link to a sat. They would issue us them when I worked for western oil and we were so far off grid regular cell phones wouldn't work.
I worked for my cozen that had a trucking company that all we did was ship bank vaults, safe deposit boxes and sensitive financial documents to banks all over the US we used sat phones along with police radios and undercover police escorts. The trucks were equipped with 1000 gallon fuel tanks on each side with 20 foot sleepers and we ran 3 team drivers. One would drive, one would navagate, and the other would be sleeping. We never stopped for anything. You drove 4 hours on and four hours off with run flat tires Escorts would clear the way and we were instructed to never stop for any reason. We would drive from coast to coast and never stop. We would go through towns when the cops would make all the lights turn green. If a car tied to or ran into you truck we never stopped. The cops would take care of the accident but our convoy never stopped. The sleepers were mini campers we cooked our own meals, that had there own bathrooms and showers. We never stopped because of what we were carrying. multi millions in cash, gold, safe deposit boxes that were worth over 100 million dollars worth of bank notes ,cash and gold. These trucks were prime targets for hijackers. Planed wrought were suddenly changed, sat GPS tracked all the way, no weigh station stops. Nothing. I made real good money doing that.job over 100K a year. We always had a minimum of 7 or 8 undercover swat cops in the convoy. The trucks had cameras everywhere and monitored the whole way. Thats how banks ship cash, gold and bank notes all over the US. And that was 20 years ago. He retired and sold the company for over 800 million dollars and now owns thousands of acres of ranch land and runs cattle now.

How did we get from Virtual DJ .. to Deep State Lunatics?

I know nothing about OnStar. GPS, well...I was a serious sailboat racer for years, and GPS's like Garmin's completely changed everything because of VMG - Velocity Made Good. All you care about in racing is getting to the next "Mark" as quickly as possible, and VMG does that. So I had to learn a few things.

First and foremost - you can hold a Garmin or similar GPS next to your head without harm - it only receives, it does not transmit. The signal it's trying to acquire is so weak, it's actually a noise pattern. There is one satellite running a master clock - all the other satellites are timed off of it, and transmit the same identical "noise pattern" the GPS is looking for. Your GPS then simply computes the time difference between the signals - at least 3 to triangulate, at least 4 if you also need elevation (airplane).

The system was originally initiated by the DOD when, at the height of the Cold War with Russia, we needed more accurate targeting of our ICBM's carrying MIRV warheads. It was so expensive, Congress would only approve it if it also had a Civilian sub-channel with degraded accuracy. To that end, 21 satellites were put up in a geo-synchronous orbit covering the Polar routes between us and Russia - the initial system actually didn't work in the Southern Hemisphere. The Civilian side was also prone to "Selective Availability" - a further degradation of accuracy anytime tensions between Russia and the US increased. Shortly after that, another 21 satellites were put up at a slightly higher elevation than the original 21. As the orbits decay, the lower one is turned "off" and the higher one is turned "on", and so on.

The original system is now greatly expanded, with a lot more satellites giving a lot more coverage. Plus, I can't remember the last time "Selective Availability" was used. Just remember that when you ask Siri for directions, you owe it all to Nikita Khrushchev banging his shoe on his desk at the UN!!

My garman has wifi capability, It's how it finds gas stations, hotels, schools, churches, restaurants, hospitals, what ever your looking for. You don't need an address all you need is the name of the place your looking for. Say you need gas, but want Shell gas not just any gas. Type or say Shell gas station and it will find and give you a list of Shell gas stations and there distance and time of arrival. In fact It's voice activated, all you have to do is ask it and it will tell you. It will hands free link to my phone if I wish. And if I have wifi activated it will sometimes ask if someone can link it my gps's wifi. So It is both sending and reviving a signal. You can program it to bypass tolls, highways carton roads, short cuts. Red light cameras, speed trap cameras, it even has live traffic updates and will wrought you around. It even has user input so you can tell it there is a traffic jam at a location and it will feed that into it's data bank. You can report traffic light outages and it will warn others that that light is out. So It's not just reviving, it also sending information. It's not the old school gps like my old TomTom where you had to plug it into a PC to get updates. It updates by wifi now and you don't need a PC to do it. There not like to old gps of 10 years ago. These new ones both sending and receive live updates at all times.
It's like comparing a dumb phone to a smart phone. It will even break down restaurants according to what type of food you are looking for.
Just simply say garman find bbq and it will only show where any bbq joint is. Or say garman find Walmart and it will find and give a list starting with the nearest and give the location, mills and arrival time. It will tell you the speed limit on the road your on and if it changes it will ring and say speed change in 1 mile ahead and tell you if what the speed will be when you get there. And the instant you pass the speed limit sign it will post an icon showing the new speed limit. It will also give elevation and has screen color showing high and low elevations. You can say garman call joe smith and it will dial your phone and connect you hands free. So yes now there smart gps's not dumb ones.
If you have an old gps, you should take a look at the new ones, they do way more then they use to. I can be driving along and it will ring and say red light camera ahead ans an icon will pop up. It will warn you of a school zone ahead and give the posted speed limit of that school zone. It will warn you of RR xings or what ever you want it to. You just go into the menu section and tell it what you want it to do and it will do it. It will even post a google map picture of the place your looking for so you can see what it looks like. It even knows what lane your in on a multi lane road. They are way better then they use to be.

No need - stopped racing boats when I retired, and updated Froggy's motto from "Nothing better than messing around in boats" to "Nothing better than messing around in other people's boats" !!

I'm just showing you how far gps technology has come and with the aps running and wifi they can be tracked. Mine even has a sim card slot that records screen shots has a camera built in. I passed some road construction the other day and they detured me around it going the wrong way on the road, and my gps kept screaming at me that i was going the wrong way on the road. It even knows what lane your in. Like smart phones they to have come a long way.
