I know that seems odd; (at least to me, because I have never done a fashion show). It is for a charity and that is what they asked for the the coordinator for the fashion so finally called me this weekend. I have only spoken to the event coordinator prior. I know they want to keep it family friendly. Looking for about 1 hours worth of ideas. Open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Do this all the time for cocktail hours. Just some good deep house chill music. Doesn’t have to be anything specific… it’s not gonna be familiar anyways since it has no words. Also I like to do Saxaphone house music. If deep house is too slow, you can do like tropical house music. You can find a bunch of stuff on Spotify.

I like using instrumentals that have some familiarity to them.
Only reason I didn’t mention instrumentals of current songs is bc this is a fashion show and typically the tempo is faster, particularly if there is an actual show and want to provide a good pace for them to walk.

If I recall, Top Hits USA has instrumental versions of popular songs. I think an instrumental version of "Family Affair" -
Mary J. Blige would be a cool strut. When's the fashion show? I made a CD of up-tempo popular instrumental songs. See if I can find it. Will look tomorrow (Tuesday).

I used to do award shows all the time with teams of kids that needed to be herded to the front of the stage and get their awards. It could take 30 secs (or more) for each group which gets really boring when there are 2 dozen teams (and every team gets some damned award). I would use familiar upbeat songs with long instrumental interludes. The disco era had a bunch of these and all the parents knew them and would clap along. There was always some announcement between each group which meant I didn't have to segue between songs. It was an easy gig as I would just save the cue points and put all the songs I use in a folder ahead of time.

I have never done a fashion show so I don't know if it is common to change songs with each runway model or keep one groove going for each designer.

BTW, I have a funk inspired playlist I created for my own benefit that is pretty upbeat and most of the songs lack lyrics. You may find it moderately helpful although I think it would appeal to an older crowd. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6MjCUXHDAvQYFKhVCs5Ljn?si=4e75fdeb1abe4fe5

I've done fashion shows before, and often there are "segments" to the show, or themes, such as evening attire, swimsuit, casual, etc. depending on the designer or sponsor of the show. The one's that I've done always wanted instrumental upbeat music as the designer or boutique owner would often speak over the music and discuss the pieces. Now that isn't always the case, and as such the music would be more in line with the styles of the category, but typically was still instrumental, as the music is supposed to enhance the atmosphere subconsciously... not be recognizable and distract from the focus of the attire... for example swimsuit would have tropical house music as I mentioned before... kind of that miami beach/rooftop party vibe... evening had more of a sexy deep house vibe... think nyc or la upscale lounge where it's a bit more sophisticated... and every other category was somewhere in between. Ultimately though, the designer/boutique owner would best express that.

To the OP, if this was local to me, I'd likely assume this contact person is looking for that upbeat house music atmosphere, especially bc of the mention of no vocals.... but honestly, you should just ask for some clarification. You're in Charleston, SC... this could go both ways... there are "simpler" crowds who it's best to keep things more "mainstream" and then there are the ritzy/trendy crowds that are exposed to more diverse experiences. As you can see just from this post alone, you have a multitude of opinions as to what fashion show appropriate music is.

Thanks for all the responses nd great ideas. The event is not until April 9th so I have some time; but do not want it to sneak up on me at the last minute. I will check out all these ideas so keep them coming. It will be a mixed audience of families with children and other adults. The fundraiser is called Lowcountry Orphan Relief. https://lowcountryorphanrelief.org/
