I can't find the post offhand but about 10 years ago we were discussing DJ software and I predicted due to piracy that these companies will be making some deal with music companies to give away software for promoting their music or brand that way everyone gets paid something. I think you'll see more of this on the horizon too

Careful with this - will not run on anything lower than Windows 10.
What intelligent individual runs anything lower than W10 anyway .. :)

...this is probably a reaction to Serato DJ Lite, plus (notice it can only be installed through "Native Access") would hopefully be a future upgrade path to Traktor Pro 3 (Traktor has always been a monster and is probably extremely intimidating to the first time user).

So, now there's two major DJ software's whose free "Lite" versions interface with hardware - it will be interesting to see what, if anything, VDJ does

You could already get pretty much the same thing with PCDJ DEX3, only you couldn’t get the app for free...

I don't think I'm interested in a SoundCloud subscription. Today it is targeted at those that play remixes .. the basic music available isn't as broad as that from music pools. I think Spotify would be a better subscription. Hopefully more apps will support it in the near future.

Algoriddm DJ Pro might be an option once they support video on Windows (only Mac today).

DJay Pro lacks the essential functions for playing your OWN music. You use iTunes, so it might work better for you, but for one who plays from their own music library without a library management app, DJay Pro does not work very well for me. I really wanted to make it work on my Surface Pro, but finally gave up and installed Traktor Pro 3.

These apps must have very small development teams. I just can't imagine it being very demanding to have music, video, karaoke and external integrations in most of them at this point at minimum on one OS platform.

DJay Pro can play your own music - not sure what that means?

You can’t make a playlist. You can import one from iTunes or Spotify, but if you want to play your own music, you have to choose the tracks one at a time from your library.

But even a playlist in iTunes, is your own music. You don't have to use a playlist either, it could be your own music that you placed on the iPad (or other) and indexed via iTunes.

Yes... you can make a playlist in iTunes and use it in DJay Pro, but I don’t use iTunes and a DON’T want to. If DJay Pro was SO SPECTACULAR that I just had to use it, then I guess I would install iTunes, but it’s not that spectacular. I like Traktor without iTunes better than DJay Pro with iTunes.

I've never created a playlist in my life. Just sayin....:sqeek::djsmug: Never felt the need....

I have a ton of them... I have playlists of “Upbeat Instrumental”, “Soft Instrumental”, Swing Music”, “50’s Rock”, “Line Dances”, “Country Dance”, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s’, etcetera... You can select songs by the MP3 tag information, but when your library is REALLY big, that still means searching through a long list. My playlists are like my “best of”, and then I also have playlists of the client’s selections. That’s the way I’ve always worked, and it works for me.

My genre's are quite specific, so I guess you could say that's almost the same...

When you gig for the same people at the same place all the time, a "Playlist" is an exercise in futility.
1) If you actually do that, the "sameness" becomes boring
2) Some nights they want more Salsa, some nights more Merengue, some nights more Bachata, etc., and it is almost unpredictable.
3) Or local mayor will show up unannounced (really) with a bunch of younger people in tow, to present an award - suddenly you're into Freestyle
4) On and on

This is why, although I like Serato and play with it a home, I don't gig with it - I use software that allows me to easily preview songs WITH all the decks loaded. Due to commercial pressure they will eventually have to add it (lke they added Sync), but they want "unlike VDJ" bragging rights as long as possible.

Playlists aren't strict lists .. they're like crates, just another way to organize music.
