What do you consider expensive?

I've been using Digital Performer as my DAW for years. I've upgraded a few times but every upgrade is another $250 so I'm not up with the latest version.

I use Ableton Live as a DAW -- but I paid way more than $100. I use Maschine for simple beat and rhythm making.

Reaper is free, and much better than expected for the price. I have used this a bit over the years, and it is more than usable as a DAW.

Audacity all the way. I don't make music but I create mixes multiple times a year for different events such as fireworks displays, air shows, taken shows, etc.

I record radio commercials at work...
and we use Adobe Audition.
Multiple tracks, plenty of built-in effects, and easy to use.
I use it at home for mixes and song editing.
Not cheap...but darn it, it's worth it.
