To EQ or not to EQ, that is the question

And a lot worse. The first rule of EQ's are they are there to take out far more often than they are to put in

If you end up using a dual 31 band EQ, that's the best way to use it - by cutting frequencies, not by boosting them (whenever possible).

True but only to a point. It all depends on what frequencies your working with and what the shape of the curve is.

the OP's only prior experience with EQ; is a 5 band graphic built into the main out of a moderst DJ mixer. A parametric EQ is probably well ahead of where he is on the learning curve, too expensive, and wouldn't help anyway because there are no mic insert jacks on most DJ mixers.
You are correct on that, my first mixer had a small built in EQ, but the principal is identical. Plus I thought I mentioned that I am not using this for my controller, I will be putting this inline with my Behringer Xenyx 4 channel mix board. There is such a thing as studying, and learning. I have been doing some research about becoming a live sound tech to add to my list of things I can do.
