Just for a little perspective....
I busted my a** all day Saturday and Sunday...
lugging gear around for 12 hours + each day...
and I didn't make nearly that much for the whole weekend.
WHY?
Because I like to work, I like the work I am doing,
Because it's a couple of extra bucks in my pocket,
Because I like to keep active, even when I cannot be a DJ,
Because I get better at the job, the more I do...
Because it makes me happy to know that what I am doing makes others happy,

It's not always about the money.

But we all know .. Mix DOESN'T need to get better at anything .. ;)

A $50 difference is not deciding to go cheap. Again, you gambled (over a $50 difference). Also again, the funny part is that you needed the money. Sure, you will survive - but look at what happened to your finances - that money could have helped.
Sorry you see it that way I did what I felt was right for me. There times when I have to say. No matter how bad I want the job. Haven't we done that at one time in our business? I get what you're saying. $50 shouldn't have been a deal breaker but for me this time it was. We had already came up with a price he shouldn't have refused but he did.

He realized his mistake after the fact. Too late now. He should have gotten us to do it when the price was $300. We were trying to look out for him with that price because it's a charity event where part of the money will go to research for the Cancer his son died from.

This charity event is not something where people pay $100_$1,000 to attend. It's a free event in the park. So it's not a high class charity event. You can come there dressed almost any way you want to.

Charity events like this one is where what they're able to pay shouldn't even be a factor. If you're close to the people who are organizing the event and you believe in the cause, there is no "deal breaker" - you just pitch in to make things happen. Why not donate your time? Did you have the day off? Yes. Were others volunteering their time? I bet they were. Would the event have been more successful with your help? Possibly. Would people who may not ordinarily see you perform get to see what you do? Undoubtedly.

Sorry to say this Mix, but your talent was wasted because of $50. On top of that, you had the audacity to be there for no other reason than to take pictures and hate on the DJ. That man's son DIED... and you're calling his decision not to pay you $50 more to DJ at his free community event "his mistake"?

The $50 raise that you needed so very badly was absolutely stupid. I wish I could do more events like these. They're for a good cause, the people are super-appreciative that you're helping by providing your services, and they're usually a lot of fun. If they also pay a little bit, cool.

My issue wasn't just about money alone. The issue I had with him is that I've done other events that he was a part of. So it's not like he doesn't know me and know what I can do. I felt insulted when he wouldn't agree to pay me $50. I feel sorry that his son died but why shouldn't I get paid for doing my job if he has money to pay me?

Even at $350 for that many hours we're not talking a lot of money here. For him to pay that isn't breaking the bank.

When we first did it we were getting paid $200. We were looking out for him then. What's wrong with us getting a small raise for the great work we do?

We are sponsors of 2 cancer organizations and work for discounted rates. Because of the amount of the discount and everything else we do, we are listed as sponsors on the back of their shirts and their marketing. We are also recognized on the banners of the events, etc. This means we volunteer part of the time we are there, get paid a very discounted rate and get advertising and exposure we wouldn't receive sitting on the sofa at home if we didn't have a gig. We have received many other events because of us doing these.

So your issue "IS" just about the money.

The POINT of the event is to RAISE MONEY for a charity.
While that alone should be reason enough....try this:
The more you ask for a "raise"....the less valuable you become to THEIR cause.

I've done the same gig, twice a year, for more than 20 years.
The job doesn't get any harder, so I haven't raised my rate in more than 15 years.
Because I like the organization, I like what they do, and I want them to succeed.

I here what you're saying. Like I said when we first did the event we did it for $200 for 9 1/2 hours. So the little bit more we did ask for shouldn't hurt the cause. I'm looking at it being fair for both parties.

Just as the little bit less that was offered shouldn't have hurt the case either.

I felt it would hurt me. How low do I go and when is somebody going to feel sorry for me? We're talking 9 1/2 hours of work and I don't deserve $350?!

I don't know .. would you deserve it? It seems the DJ(s) that did it brought basically the same gear you would, seemed to have a nicer wireless mic ... so are your skills that much better and would the audience care?

I've done longer days for charity at ZERO pay ... AND brought much more gear (brought a system and monitors for several bands to use).

It's all relative.

I feel like we've been over this before

He knows what you can do, and what you've done, but opted to go with an unknown to save $50. What does that tell you?

$50 isn't much, and it doesn't sound like he feels you've done him favors in the past.

We don't always discount charity events. I feel we are pretty good at helping raise money.

But when we do offer our time or a discount, our contact is typically very appreciative, at the minimum sends a thank you note.
If I liked working with the group, $50 would not be an issue. If I didn't like working with them, $50 would not make it better
