This is the craziest thing I've ever had happen with the equipment.

That's because radio stations I know are stuck on playing mostly the same old songs.

Would you like to discuss why radio does that or just make a blanket statement.....

They will introduce a new song from time to time.

On Top 40 stations they do it every day

I never said I couldn't or wouldn't play those same tired old songs every DJ around here has played 100's of times for many years.

Yes clients hate it when you play the same old songs like look at this oldie it sucks they seem to hate it

I gave her a business card with my picture on it.

And now she has no mice ;)

You've all been consumed by the dramacho vortex...I'll miss y'all...prolly...
I heard that once drawn in, you actually get spit out in the DJChat dimension and linger on lifeless forever ...

I started to make another thread and decided to post here. I don't care if Anita Baker made a song last week that became a hit. I still don't like her. Doing my job has nothing to do with what I like. Just focus on making the client and their guests happy.

Someone said if you're a mobile DJ you should be able to do any event. I totally disagree. Some are better at one thing and another DJ something else. We all can't be the same. There are some who are great at today's hip hop and R & B. One DJ might be good at doing an event where they want lots of Country Music and another one suck. With that being said what are you good at?

Now about yesterday. I got a nice compliment about the event I did in Jersey City. The lady at the meeting said I did a great job. I didn't think so. More than enough people said I did a great job and they loved what I did. That's including my partner and my DJ friend. So I just need to easy does it and stop being so hard on myself.

They have another event coming up in October at the same place. If they pick me and I can do it this will be the first time doing an event like this. It's a speaker Jam, lip sync and dance. I have never done an event with lip sync. So I have to be on top of my game for that part. If it October 12th I can't do. I got a surprise 50th birthday celebration to do that day.

My thing is being well prepared for that part. I got a hot spot, tablet and wire to from my tablet to my controller. So that way if I need to get a song off line no problem. Just make sure I have the next 3 people performing songs ready to go and not keep them waiting.

While this is great for us (as DJ's) to hear, it means nothing if these people are not booking or referring you.

That and nobody you talk to in person is going to say anything but "You were great" .. even if they don't believe it.

Anita Baker's last top 40 hit was 25 years ago, so not really newer stuff, though I like her music. And Let It Fall, and I'm assuming the Lady Alma version even though the Lykke Li version ranked higher, is really a heavily manufactured club song. The artist is relatively obscure, so yea, most crowds won't know what it was.

But still, all the songs you mentioned .. all the artists you mentioned .. are all club house music, and the market for that as a mobile DJ is almost non-existent. If you want to sponsor dances and promote them and pay the ASCAP/BMI/... fees, then maybe you'll have a shot with it. But if you are looking to pick up actual PAYING parties, it will be difficult. You'll get the same group every time.

LOL...I have 1 Anita Baker song in my collection that I play on somewhat of a routine basis, and I play it during dinner at some wedding receptions...

"Sweet Love"

It's a very nice song for weddings cocktail or dinner music.

I don't think I have ever played "Let it Fall". It's not even in my collection. Only other songs in my collection by Anita Baker is "Giving you the best that I got", and "Live for your Love" ...I'm pretty sure "Live for your love" was on a must play list from a bride for a wedding that I only played ONE TIME. Giving You the best that I got, I think I may have played that song twice in 20 years at gigs. It's good listening/relaxing song.

Anita was queen for a couple years in the mid 80s. Sweet Love is a good song .. I prefer Caught up in the Rapture.

YEP! Reviews and "in person" pleasantries are heartwarming and all.... but wanna know how to know if they really like you? When their name comes up as a referral over and over from future clients.

The whole "We really liked you but we are going with someone else this time" shouldnt even warm your heart.... and mix....you NEED to continue being hard on yourself .... you have a long ways to go bud... as do many of us.... the day i relax and stop beating myself up is the day i sell my equipment and buy a hammock

I understand that you don't have that song Let It Fall. That song is for a certain crowd. Also for certain types of events. Like I said I played it at the last event I did and it worked. Some crowds I wouldn't play that song because they wouldn't know what that song is.

Chris I get referred a lot. Now just because I get referred doesn't mean I will automatically do the event. Sometimes I'm not available and sometimes I simply don't want the booking.

My schedule is pretty thin, so there is very little chance that I will be "not available".
Unless there is a VERY good reason, I don't work often enough to "not want" a booking.

I'm pretty sure that "Live For Your Love" is a Natalie Cole song, not Anita Baker.

Don't BS us, you're likely available but I know what you mean.

I'm sure we could all book dozens of no-profit to free gigs daily if we trolled in that muck.

lately ive been trolling church basement support groups and backyards for work... fingers crossed the committee likes me.

You're trying to be funny but this is serious. I do those speaker jam dance events for 2 big reasons. It's what I'm passionate about and I'm aiming for something much bigger that I won't talk about till it happens.

You're going to corner the market on recording via memo recorder?

He starts with the local group, then works up to regionals, then the state championship. Next thing you know he's providing sound at the Speaker Jam invitationals in Waukegan IL, and then at the Speaker Jam World Series in Sheboygan.

Don't pick on the guy... he's got big ambitions.
