I am making this thread because I had a short meeting with this guy in a club on Monday night. It wasn't that long. My friend who was DJing at the club that night mentioned me to this guy. He did work for this guy and there were issues that came up. I don't want to get into all of that.

He's planning on an event at the Elks lodge in the summer. Let me get to what I need to talk about. He is looking to do this event at this club we were in called Level 10. Very nice place and being run just the way I like it. They don't allow the drama for your mama's in. Only mature adults. No rap music or anything close to that.

So ok the guy wants to use the room in the basement to do an event in and me be the DJ. The event is to be 5 hours if he does it. The owner wants $500 for someone to use that room for an event. I know why he wants that much for that small room. To keep the rift raft out. The room can hold about 70 people if that depending on how the room is setup. There's no real dance floor.

Now the thing is Ithe guy says he would pay me $300 to do the event. I know to have a signed contract with him because of issues my friend has had in the past with this guy. I was told to just do the job and worry about me getting paid. Now the cost so far for him renting the room and paying me makes it up to $800. I'm just concerned on how he's going to make enough money to have this event and make sure I get paid. My friend said just do the job so I get more exposure and people who work in the club can get to hear me play. That's great. My thinking tells me that just because you have a signed contract doesn't mean you will get paid all your money. I don't want to have to get paid part of the money then have to wait to get the rest. I've also never taken someone to court to get paid. Am I over reacting about this and just do the job or what? Any suggestions please and no sly comments like drama again please.

Imagine if we all as working dj's made a post everytime we got a dumb dead end non lucrative inquirey for our services...

Imagine if we all posted about cheap jobs where the client believed that we should do it for "exposure"

This board would be flooded non stop with post after post...probably one every few minutes...

I realize that inquirey's of any kind are a novelty to you Mix....but please...MAKE A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO JUST STOP ...stop it all

Yes, you're overreacting.

If you don't think he will pay you... don't book the gig. If you think he will pay you, then simply explain when you want to be paid and how when you book. It's literally a decision you make on every single booking ever.

I have never worried about someone paying me because I do not do business with shady people. Then again I also have never ever cared how much someone paid for a rental hall or worried how much they were going to make on an event. Oh yes Mixy for someone worried about safety in a club you must have missed this.

I guess they "WANT" you and you seem to get off on being "WANTED" ...

Not really sure how it works that "He's planning on an event at the Elks lodge in the summer ", buuutttt .. "He is looking to do this event at this club we were in called Level 10" .. so he wants to do it at the Elks Lodge at Level 10 ????

Jimmy that story was in 2015. That's before the new owner took over the place. Now this owner has his act together. He don't allow certain people in his club because he he doesn't want things turning into a hot mess. He's not desperate for money. So he can afford to do things the way he's doing them. This place is on North Center Street and the Lodge is on Main Street. I decided if he has the event there I will do it. I guess he will look to do it in April. He will keep in touch for sure.

Why don’t u just get paid before the event... problem solved. Al my clients that pay by personal check have to pay me 2 weeks in advance. Otherwise cash on the day of BEFORE the official start time.
We have been going over the two weeks before on forums for years and this guy is not listening or really doesn't have anything to do with bookings. Bookings are done thru Mixys partner. He is just the man with the van and subs.

what reason do you have to doubt the guy will pay?
It's none of your concern if he makes enough money on the event to pay for his advertising, room rent and dj, and any other expenses he has. Some people are happy to have a loss leader. I've worked for several years on an event that the founder LOSES about $50k on every year. A single event. It's his passion.

As mentioned, you can always specify in your contract to have payment prior to start of performance. Then he knows you showed up and are ready to play at least. Terms can't just favor you. How does he know you'll show up? Contracts take a mutual understanding AND respect.

I cant even fathom this much concern for a 300 dollar pay day i gotta split 3 ways...

Or one I got to keep myself for that matter...

Mixy just tell him you need the money before you unload gear. If he's not good with that don't unload the gear. He then either pays you or you go home and watch reruns of Sanford and Son or something. The only way you don't control the situation is if you allow them to control

Here's the thing. My friend called me yesterday and we talked. This guy is planning on having another big event in July at the Elks Lodge in Orange, NJ. The plan is to have four singers that are famous that everybody knows come in and perform. Along with a dance. My friend wants me to be the DJ to do it this time. It's a lot of work for that one day. You have to be there at 11am to setup and the performers will come in to rehearse what they are going to do. After that get dressed and wait for the start of the event. My friend doesn't feel like doing it this year. He just wants to observe.

Now the question is can I do it. Of course. The thing is will I do it. It would be great exposure. Now the setup to do this event has to be serious. At least 4 corded microphones and the 2 wireless microphones. As far as the gear we would use 2 subs, the 2 Yamaha DSR 115's tops and dual 15's to complete the setup for this event. Oh yes of course we would have to use the mixing board.

So my plan is if he does that party in the basement at Level 10 do that and then decide if I want to do the big event. Like I said me and my friend talked last night and he basically threw the gig in my lap. I thanked him for the compliment.

So, your friend who's a DJ had issues with this guy. So instead of taking the gig or gigs himself, he suggested you?

Great friend.

Do it for money, get paid 100% up front. Not for exposure. You've been doing this for 30 years. You are over exposed
