Greetings everyone! My name is Kenny and I go by the name DJ Late Start aka Kenny Magick, the DJ Late Start part was giving to me by my wife
I have always loved music, but never imagined I would get to the age of 49 to decide to learn to dj. What an experience it has been, and I am no where near done. So it all started out when a coworker (who was a dj on the side) and I were having a conversation about a dj controller w/case he was going to buy from another dj. He already owned the very same controller, but was buying the other one w/case to turn a profit. After all that talk about controllers and cases and music, etc., I began to wonder what it would be like to have/use some dj gear. He introduced me to a company called American Musical Supply where I would be able to purchase gear on a payment plan that wouldn't break the bank, so I started out with a Roland DJ-505. I leaned toward this controller because it comes with a step-sequencer, built-in 505, 606, 707, 808 drum kits, and has some other cool features as well. From there I bought a used MacBook Pro off of eBay for about $300, and knew nothing about Macs, never even had one, or an iPhone... But, I persevered and continued to learn and buy more gear. I wind up getting a pair of JBL EON 615's off of Craigslist, and that was the first set of equipment I had to do a set. I practiced, studied the manuals, viewed hours on hours of YouTube videos, and practiced some more. Eventually I began to learn beat matching, song selection, cable wrapping, gear set up, gain setting etc. I upgraded my gear this year to a pair EV ZLX 15BT's, a pair of EV ZXA1 12" Subs, and a Denon DJ Prime 4 controller. Being that I from Paterson, NJ I play more dance music, some hip hop, but mostly house music and R & B. I am an amateur and a novice, but my love for great music and providing people with an enjoyable experience is what drives me to push on despite my late start. I am hoping to gain some professional insight from this forum, and offer any I may have to some one who may be less experienced than myself. I look forward to learning from you guys, and thanks for the opportunity.
Also, I am in our local community college taking a few courses on music production, as I intend to make music as well. All the best to every professional DJ who is making amazing moments with the magic of music!!!
