I'm at the senior center in Montclair, NJ and finally got to test out the new mics I bought and they work flawlessly. I love them.

Now please be kind when I tell this. I was setting up and went to use my main laptop. For some reason it kept switching screens on it. The HD came up for a second and disappeared. Never had an issue with that laptop until now. I don't know what the issue is. This is why carrying backup gear is very important. I had to use the laptop I put for backup duty. Got things setup and the laptop hasn't failed me so far. That laptop has to be well over 10 years old. Good thing I had the backup laptop or I would have had to go to my partners house to get one of his.

What more drama in a mix post, NO WAY
Where is there drama? Good thing I had a backup laptop so I could get the job done. Don't tell me in all your years you haven't had something fail you at an event? That's a big reason to carry backup gear.

Let me say this. What if I didn't have a backup laptop? Then there is no way I could have done the job. So what call a minor thing could have been major if I didn't have the backup laptop and used my head instead of panicking.

Your the man Mixy!! Plan the plan, not the results .

Good planning Mix; A Pro DJ has to have Backup Gear available.

Glad you had back up. Well done.

Anything can fail. We all need a back up plan.

We also need to take proper steps to make sure our equipment is up to date, maintained, and has the best possibility of performing it's job. That goes for computers, vehicles, etc. Don't need to be an expert, but at least basic knowledge. So when you go to an "expert", you are less likely to get ripped off.

For example, just checking your oil on a regular basis could tell you you have an oil leak. Even looking on the ground to see oil spots. That way if 2 trained mechanics miss it, you can inform them that the issue may have to do with leaking oil.(Btw, I don't think it's possible for a mechanic who actually looked at an engine to miss low or leaking oil)

A 10 yo inexpensive laptop that hasn't been well maintained is extremely likely to fail. I bring 2 relatively new laptops, 2 iPad pro's and an iPhone loaded with music. I also use the back ups on a regular basis, so I know they are up to date, well maintained and ready to go if they need to be pressed into service. I'm very confident in my equipment, which includes my vehicle as its a critical part of the equation.

If someone is routinely having to rely on plan B, it's a clue that play A isn't a solid one.

It's crazy. I hooked it up this morning and it's working just fine.
In my opinion, it's not fine. It gave you a warning that it's most likely reaching it's end of life. Waiting until it won't boot up again at an event is not the best strategy.

If you know how to diagnose /repair/replace a faulty hard drive, it would be advised. Otherwise, a new computer makes sense.

No need to buy a new laptop. It's fine now. Just strange that this happened.

Strange that a 10yo inexpensive laptop couldn't read a hard drive. I see.

Someday I hope you figure out that leaking oil and failing hard drives are signs of trouble ahead.

While bad things can happen to anyone , they just happen much more to people who fail to plan for very foreseeable events or fail to see obvious warning signs.

For example, how often do you change your oil? A reputable oil change service would most likely have noticed your oil leak.

You remind me of my nephew at times. He seems to occasionally have trouble projecting out what results his actions could bring down the road. But he's only 17

You're wrong sir. It was the newer laptop that day was acting up. The very next day no problem. The one over 10 years old worked flawlessly that day.

I think we are witnessing it right now Scott....

Mix my main Laptop is 15 years old it works without a problem but I fully realize it will at some point stop working. My backup laptop was a few years old so I went last summer and purchased two brand new ones. I still use my 15 year old Dell for gigs because it's my favorite but I always have the other new one there and a third one in my mixer case just in the rarity that I have a mass failure for some reason.

What you are describing is a disaster waiting to happen. If I had to guess my first guess would be the external HD or the cable is bad but it could be the USB port or the HD in the machine or Windows could be buggy. It really needs to be diagnosed and if it's intermittent it might be tough but it will happen again probably at the most inopportune time
.

Guys you can talk to mix till your blue in the face, he doesn’t listen, takes no advice and hasn’t improved his DJing or life in anyway since he’s been on this forum, He just here for our entertainment, a continuous train wreck you help but watch
You suggest I buy a new laptop. Both laptops are fine. What you didn't suggest is where the money is going to come from to buy it and you don't pay my bills.
