How many stock brokers wake up and say, "I am going to make the most beautiful Excel sheet anybody has ever seen."

How many sculpters wake up and say, "I am going to make more money with my carving than anybody has ever seen."

In either case, I doubt there are very many; if I am wrong, then stop reading now.

The "average" DJ, however, falls somewhere VERY CLOSE to the middle. The "mean" of all DJs is the DJ who does his/her job in order to make enough money while doing something very creative. At one extreme, we have DJs who do it all just for the money; at the other, we have DJs who do it all just for self-expression.

Where are you on the scale, roughly?

I appear to be the 1st guy to choose the "It's mostly for the money, and it's a fun way to make so much of it.". What I really am is the "It's mostly for the money, so I don't have to have a real job" guy. I do enjoy the freedom this business allows, and a guy can make a great living doing it.

For the first decade, I really loved the business. I liked entertaining the crowds, I like the travel, and I viewed every show as my latest work of art. It also allowed me to get into different businesses including a Night Club, a Pub, a sign company, and a Sound and Lighting Retail store/production company. But, the last 6 years I've had to deal with a million + dollar Robbery that nearly wiped me out in 2000, another theft in 2003 while trying to expand into Ontario, and 2 f-in teachers strikes in 3 years. I've become jaded. And while I really enjoy taking the cheques to the bank, there is little enjoyment left in the business itself.

So, why do I do this you ask? Because it's all I know, and the money is good.

My goal for this year is to find that lost enjoyment in actually doing the gigs, and once again be the guy that "Really Really wants to do this". I miss that feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment for a job well done.

Thanks Pig for that honest eval........
Beings I just have recently begun a new journey into business ownership the new is still giving me the chills and each new step forward rewards that chill with another exciting jolt. Im in it to be fulltime so I can do only this for the next 10 to 20 yrs. So while its about to become my way to earn living exclusive, I would find a regular job and still do this out of love of the experience if fulltime doesnt present it self to me as planned in the next 6 months.

It's always been about the passion for me! I have been doing it passionately for over 20 yrs. I wrestled with the full time dilemma many years ago and came to the conclusion that if I went full time in this bizz, it would have eventually become a job and not my passion. I never wanted to get to the point in my career where I dreaded having to do a gig because I had a mortgage to pay. This, in no way, is a diss on full timers at all so please don't take offense! I just know me and what I was afraid would have happened to me. I still have the passion today that I had back then. This sounds cheesy I know, but the money is an added bonus. It is great getting paid for doing what I love. There's my spill...thx

I had a very wise teacher that once told me what ever you decide to do for a living make sure it is something you really love because you will be spending the majority of your time doing it.

I love what I do, but I want to make a good living at it.

I think once it becomes your career, something gets lost. When you start out, it's reall fun, but like every JOB, it gets old. Keeping it part time avoids that, as it is never you 'job'.
