So, I've been getting ready to KJ my neighbors house party this Saturday. I'll be using OpenKJ and my laptops audio (headphone) output - no controller.
No controller for me means no EQ adjustments, so I did a little searching around.

You know how everyone has been wishing for years that there was a high quality, global, real-time EQ for Windows, that inserts seamlessly in the audio pipeline, and works with anything? Well, I guess someone was listening -
Equalizer APO

31 bands if you want, but here's a nice, easy to use 10 or 20 band GUI for it, with a lot of useful presets -
PC Equalizer-GUI

I think it also supports VST plugins, so I'll be trying to get "ReLife" to work with it.

I am ready!

Looks like it only supports 64 bit VST's. If anyone tries Equalizer APO and can get ReLife (which I believe is only available as 32 bit) to work, please let me know.

OK... Please excuse my ignorance, but what the heck is ReLife?[emoji1]

I have never wished there was an EQ to insert in the audio pipeline of my PC. It's like wanting a CD player with a built in EQ.

I hear ya. I don't like to task the computer with additional running applications. However, this is a special situation for me.

I really don't do Karaoke, but a neighbor asked for help, so I'm jury rigging a little. If the PC throws up a few times, I'll get through it. However, all the testing I've done so far is good, and OpenKJ plus this EQ app are all free, and I gotta tell ya - even though it's "just karaoke" - it sounds dam good. The video part is just a few HDMI TV's.

What really saved my hinny here is a few years ago I picked up $100 worth of SCDG's - about 9000 songs - again, just to play around with. They've been ripped to my HD.

Got the AKG mics, told the neighbor to get a noise permit from the police (we're in Florida, I'll be outside on the patio), plus the DJ's best friend will be there - alcohol! I think we're good.

Is the theme for this soiree' "Famous Train-wrecks"?

You could run this video on a loop to keep the visuals on point:

TRY THE VEAL!!!

So, you've put an EQ on the digital music track but the analog mics are unprocessed?
How does that sound good?

Mics are going through a DBX GoRack for everything - mic preamps, feedback suppression, compression, EQ, and Mono mode. 1/8" earphone output jack of the laptop goes to the 1/8" Aux Stereo input of the GoRack (that is not processed, it just goes to the GoRack's outputs) - real minimalist system that IMHO actually sounds pretty darn good.

Like a lot of others, I picked up the GoRack for $30 when they were being discontinued. I'm surprised how good the mic preamps are. It's biggest fault is the very poor electrical input connection. One of these days I'll open up it's cover and hard wire it.

Can't you use the GoRack for basic EQ?

Yes. On routing "Option 3", the Aux input would go through the GoRack's EQ, but by using routing "Option 1" it doesn't.
I'm doing this deliberately to keep the mics EQ (the GoRack) and the music EQ (Equalizer APO in the PC) separate, so I can adjust them interdependently.

There are small mixers that would probably be an easier solution than cobbling some free software together.

But what fun would that be???[emoji1] Sometimes easier is boring. Playing with new software can be fun (for some of us). Even if we find out it doesn’t work or it’s cr@pware, that’s OK.[emoji1]

Maybe .. I'd still rather it work with little stress. I bought one of these specifically for little events where it's just a mic and a laptop (though it can handle a 2nd wireless mic) .. Samson SM4 4-channel Mixer - (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SM4--samson-sm4-4-channel-mixer)

That sounds pretty logical.

If I find myself doing Karaoke on a regular basis, I'll do that. However, it's not so easy to find a SMALL one with -

1) Good, quiet mic preamp(s)
2) Individual EQ's on all the channels
3) Compressor(s) on only the mic input(s)
4) Feedback Suppression on the mic(s) input
5) FX (specifically Reverb) on only the Mic(s) input(s)
6) and again, Small

I'm sure there's a nice 48 channel Midas board that will fit the bill .. :)

The GoRack I bought is very noisy. Can't use it at all.
