There is something wrong with either my ISP Speed or my computer. I cannot even watch a news video or U-Tube Video on this particular machine.
I am paying to get 3-5 mg as Download and 6-12mg as upload.

This is what I am actually getting from these 3 Test Sites:

http://www.speedtest.net/
= Down 0.34mps & Up .08mps

http://www.2wire.com/bandwidth/initialmeter.php
= Down 50 Kbps

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
= Down 154kbps & Up 2729kbps

A friend told me that the speed download has nothing to do with the Computer, that is the speed is slow it is the ISP (Comcast). Is this correct?
I am waiting for Comcast to show up the hear what they have to say. They always try to blame it on other things/items.

Generally the speed of the connection is the ISP's problem, but at times a Computer can be configured incorrectly or have something going on in the background to effect the overall performance.

If you load a Video locally (previously downloaded or DVD) and it plays properly you are more than likely looking at a ISP problem or any device they supply you with to make that connection.

You mentioned "On this particular machine" do you have another machine connected to your ISP and is it slow as well? If not you have your answer.

hopefully the comcastic company can do something to rectify the situation.i have time warner(road runner) here and they always give excuses for upload speed.

Download Speed: 25443 kbps (3180.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 979 kbps (122.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Virus's, bad internet router and/or switches can cause issues that drop your speed to almost nothing. start by trying to reboot your modem, router and computer.... do it in steps letting everything stay down for like 10 minutes and see what happens.

On a PC - try this - open a dos prompt and type NETSTAT -o it should list all your network connections and a PID that you can track to a program using Task Manager/Processes.

1. Did this computer previously perform as expected and is now slower on the download side?

2. Can you connect to another ISP and check your speeds?

3. Are they the same, better or worse?

4. Do other computer's perform as poorly on the same ISP?

If you answer Yes to number 1. you could have malware slowing your computers connection down....

If you answer yes to number 2 and number 3 it's better.... I would suspect the ISP if you answer 3 ans Same or Worse I'd again suspect the computer having malware running...

If you answer 4 with other computers do fine on my ISP again I would believe it's the computer... but, if they also perform poorly then I'd say it's ISP related.

First thing I'd do is download Malwarebytes and check my computer... next would be CCleaner.... if that does nothing and you've determined that the computer works fine on other networks.... I'd put a foot up my ISP's ass... as they may be throatleing your connection.

OK Comcrap guy just left. all inside lines/connections fine. New Modem installed, same problem. Page loads very slow. I can't even install a new version of McAfee Download install.
He claims its an outside issues that cannot be resolved inside.
Yes, it does the same thing on my lappy from another room. This has been literally going on for many months now. i could not take it any more when I tried to reinstall McAfee (Free from Comcrap)!

1. Did this computer previously perform as expected and is now slower on the download side? Its been acting up for quite awhile now since last year July.

2. Can you connect to another ISP and check your speeds? N/A

3. Are they the same, better or worse? N/A

4. Do other computer's perform as poorly on the same ISP? Yes, just about! I can't even view y'alls videos from Gig reports. Not at home anyway.

If you answer Yes to number 1. you could have malware slowing your computers connection down.... I have done, Malware ,Adware, CC sweeps etc....comes up empty!

In a few hours I will be installing another computer on my network, straight Ethernet connection to Modem to see what happens. I don't hold out much hope. The ideal test would be to take this machine somewhare else and test.

Answers above in red!

We had a similar issue some years ago when we lived in the apartment. TV was fine, the Internet kept dropping connection. Had Comcast's Internet people out there several times. Every time, they couldn't find the cause so they wrote it off.

The last time, Comcast sent a couple of their cable install guys. They hooked up a signal meter and found that the cable coming from across the road had gotten a kink in it when it was installed. They replaced the cable and that fixed it.

We all had a good laugh over coffee later... the cable guys said "Those Internet guys get $6.00 per hour more than we do and they're too lazy to take the ladder off the truck. They want a paycheck but don't want to do anything to earn it." :D

2. Can you connect to another ISP and check your speeds? N/A Try your lappy at an internet cafe or other place like a friend.

3. Are they the same, better or worse? N/A See above...

4. Do other computer's perform as poorly on the same ISP? Yes, just about! I can't even view y'alls videos from Gig reports. Not at home anyway. Until you can recreate the problem on another network it's still hard to diagnose it as an ISP issue and not a computer issue.

For me comcast has been great.... good connections great service but, then I've got Business Class... I can't say the same for Choice One Communications at the hotel...

Check out www.malwarebytes.org that one picked up on 15 issues at work and now the computer is working about as well as any Pentium 4 could.

Well It seems like I am in the market for another PC. It sems like the culprit is the PC I now have. I brought in the Lappy and plugged it in where the PC is and My speed came up to the range where it is supposed to be.
Looks like something may be wrong with my ethernet card in the PC.
I am presently looking at this as a starter. http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/xpsdt/ct.aspx?refid=xpsdt&s=dhs&cs=19&ref=dthp I have to add some custom configurations. This PC is for my business Art & DJ Office use, not for Gigs/Playing. I am looking for something in middle shelf that will last about 3 years before an upgrade. My present PC was purchased Jan 2004 and upgraded once.
Whats your opinion?

Go into your network card settings, and turn off legacy power save in the wireless properties. XP had a somewhat recent that enabled this idiotic feature by default.

It's a common problem with netbooks especially.

what it does is throttle the wireless card down to like 1/10 performance.

worthless, because you can hardly load pages let alone stream audio or video.

I've seen several others with this problem, including myself, and we all fixed it this way..

This is a PC connected to a modem via ethernet cable. I could not find what you were suggesting.

cant do mine - our speeds here are crap!

Are They Out Of Their Freakin Mind?

Dennis,

You need to plug the network cables in backwards down under, then all will be well in the universe -- get this cable now, it comes recommended by Jeff, and quite a few other folks... :)

Are they out of their freakin mind? Do you see the price of this one?.... Amazon.com: AudioQuest K2 terminated speaker cable - UST plugs 8' (2.44m) pair: Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41TS7P9GXAL.@@AMEPARAM@@41TS7P9GXAL
Who buys this stuff?

If you quit buying at that price, you'll have more money for beer! LOL :sqlaugh:

Have plenty of money for beer :)

But in all honesty, when people spend $30-50k for hand built amps and speakers -- they don't use Monster cable for the signal path... :sqwink:

Back in the seventies I used to use zip cord with my McIntosh Amp! :sqlaugh: That was almost a crime!

lol in the 80's I use to use a 2800 baud modem to hook up to places :(
now that was slow
