Speaker Recommendations Needed: JBL PRX - Bose F1 812 - EV ZLX

Having had a BBE, I will certainly recommend leaving that out. While it makes some sounds better, overall, it kind of destroys the soundstage with the phase manipulation it does.

Other than that, all good boxes .. no bad choice

EV EKX 12P 1500watt
Cons:

See below:

Hard to explain...... Mids/Highs seemed to be all over the place with the base being defined the best. Overall, not very clean. 90-degree horizontal field / 60-degree vertical dispersion was good. Bottom line, I didn’t care for the overall sound. A lot of this may or may not be corrected by EQ, enhancers, etc.

First Choice: Bose F1 812's
Second Choice: JBL PRX812W 1500watt - 2 x 750watt
First off - wow!

Second off, great choices, whichever way you go. With the ETX (EKX's brother), I noticed mid / high things as well. Through the DSP, I backed some of the freq's down and it sounds really good now.

Awesome! I figured that most of what we experience could be corrected. Glad to hear that you have the EKX where it needs to be! I've been busy most of the day but, managed to pull one of the F1's out of the box to listen to. I'm still impressed with the clarity, nice & clean. 😊👍

I want to add, there is more base than what I heard at Sweetwater through EQing. In my finished basement, I have the one I took out of the box on a stand. C position sound the best. I still believe that at least one sub is needed to make it complete with both tops. I'll know soon but first, I need to re-work a few things in my rack before I connect my passive Peavey sub. 😊

I'm running the ETX, the EKX's brother.. ;) Any of the ones you listed would have been a great choice - including Bose. I'm/we're interested in hearing your thoughts after living with them for awhile. When they're new (whatever 'they' is), most people are going to say they are great. After living with them, you learn what you like and don't like. We like reviews. :)

I think you'll find that most of us here agree - it will sound better with at least one sub .. and even better if you can match the roll off frequency. There will be a difference in how the Bose sub would sound because the tops are usually matched to the bottoms. I'm assuming you didn't get the F1 subs?

You do know that GC has had 15% off on any individual item for close to 2 months now, right? If you ask, you can often get a better deal all year long - imagine that.
What I know is at certain times they will come up with a gimmick that supposed to be a 15% off sale. That's just normal anytime of the year depending on the price of a single item. My point was if you don't know about this the salespeople won't volunteer that information. I guess they will if they seriously need to make the sale. That would be dealing with a big ticket item.

As good as the Yorkville YS115's might have been, I bet you've taken a leap forward in the mid-range, especially important with Karaoke.

What do you have for a crossover?

First off, 'Ballrooms' don't need large systems, large events need large systems. If you're suggesting 4 tops for a ballroom, then you should also be able to suggest how to place them .. because placement is key. Regardless, your math for how many of each speaker is faulty here as well. Additionally, I would NEVER suggest a large system to a new person - as they are most likely not performing large events.
He did say he does events in small and large rooms. Also he didn't say he was new to Djing. He said he was considered changing from passive to active speakers.

Glad your experience went well.

As a suggestion, get two F1-812 and two F1 subs. For ceremonies, one F1-812 will be all you'll ever need using the various inputs for a mic, a handheld device, a mixer, etc. For really small events, a pair of F1-812 on a tripod in the reverse C configuration are awesome. For larger head counts, use a pair of each. Yes, in most cases a single F1-812 and F1 Sub would suffice, but it'll be mono which is like listening to AM radio. By using a pair, you can run stereo and bring the music to life-like depth AND have a running backup should (heaven forbid) one side craps out.

There has always been controversy stereo versus mono versus perceptible depth of discernment. A line array produces a 4 times greater depth of stereo field. That's a significant increase over conical. Also, running in stereo with speakers roughly 8 - 10 apart greatly reduces potential cancellation. Running in mono, the speakers should be 18 to 20 feet apart which is really absurd but necessary.

Btw, the L1 is a lot louder when one is far from the speaker b/c of the longer array, but up close the F1 does better as it is louder by the dancefloor. The L1 shines outdoors a couple of hundred feet back with no one blocking.

Enjoy your F1s!
