I don't know which county of the eastern panhandle the patient is in. However, concerning the farthest east leg of the panhandle: I always felt that those 3 counties SHOULD have been part of Maryland. Geographically with the way the state borders go, this particular part of West Virginia looks out of place, and should have been a part of Maryland as Maryland stretches father west than those 3 counties while running just north of that small panhandle.

Jefferson County, Berkeley County, and Morgan County

Hampshire County SHOULD be the farthest East County in WV. Just my opinion. The way state borders were drawn out in this area is dumb.

The smallest part of MD sits out there - just 1 mile wide. ;) Borders were made by Charters. You think fighting over TP is bad .. try fighting over land.:)

Way back when, MD and WV did not exist. MD was carved out of VA via Charter. At this time, there was VA and MD - and the defining boundary was and still is the Potomac River (which is located in MD). WV was later carved out of VA.

Shepherdstown, WV (where El Sicko is) is located in Jefferson County.

Yeah, those charters were made back when they had no idea what was really out west.

Even if it was carved out of Virginia though, it just looks like it should be a part of Maryland. It looks out of place being a part of West VA. and if it were a part of VA, then VA would look goofy on that side of the state.

Considering the river doesn't travel in a straight line, this makes sense. FWIW, the folks in western MD have voiced that they want their own state - so there may be a WM at some point.

I agree with them. Annapolis pretty much completely ignores Western Maryland. They have been complaining for years, and nothing has changed. Also, Gerrymandering is a big problem in Maryland.

The big concern I would have with Western Maryland becoming their own state is that they would be a pretty poor state. They don't have financial stability on their own to really be a state. ...And what would be their capital? Hagerstown? Cumberland? Both would be a pretty poor excuse for a state capital.

Hagerstown could put the capital right smack dab in the middle of the Tanger Outlet...

Depending on where you draw the line, Hagerstown could be it. Frederick could be it. Cumberland 'could' be it. Compared to DC and Baltimore, Hagerstown is poor. Compared to other cities, like Cumberland, Hagerstown is a metropolis. Lots of new houses and quite a few jobs. Hagerstown airport gets way more business than Frederick does. Additionally, Volvo trucks (used to be Mack) is located there.
