Sounds like advice to "be nice", I can get down with that.

More good advice...know to whom you are advising...and you can't KNOW anyone just by membership in these forums.

While I agree you can offer the basics and be nice about it. You can also get to know people here

I honestly think (at times) the attitude here is kinder than it is on many places where DJs seem to congregate online. As a group, DJs are not particularly nice to guys that are inexperienced. It's really bad on facebook.

My current path is a combination of 15-20 years of trying stuff and figuring it out, learning other DJs styles as I've worked with them, and trying to glean things from what people share online.

The funny thing about giving the information away is... even when you do, most people won't take it. Lots of people are looking for a short cut, and even when you give them one based on some blend of knowledge and experience they do it their own way anyway. Sometimes that is just stubbornness, and sometimes it's innovation.

I agree.

I love learning from others here. But I'll admit I've ignored "advice" from people that seem to come off as mean or condescending. I see that more in Facebook groups, but here on occasion. It doesn't seem like genuine help, bit more like looking for an occasion to put someone down.

I also agree that there are many people that won't take good advice and continue to struggle. But there's also a lot of lurkers that read and rarely comment. Your good advice might really be helping them. I met a DJ in Minnesota years ago. I was at a tradeshow for my other work. We were at a club at night for a reception. I was checking out the DJ equipment and started talking with the DJ. Turns out he was a regular lurker on djchat and knew my name from there. He said he found my posts extremely helpful. That was nice to know.

I have to agree with Ross/Scott, a good amount of the DJ Facebook groups can be pretty toxic, not all , they are a few that seem to be pretty chill and are all about helping out the new comers. Its sad the amount of gatekeeping there is in the DJ world.

How long was it before you felt you knew enough and were good enough to perform at events for clients and their guest? After the first few events how much did you learn and how much did you find out you still needed to learn?

I'll never stop feeling that I need to learn.

I felt I was awful at first....and I was....but I showed up.....and listened enough to do whati was told. I knew I needed to learn a ton more to be decent.

LOL. The typical forum is full of people that want free advice on how to get free stuff, free of any responsibility for freely skirting the obvious hazard free methods.

I always assess a person's own self-investment before donating my own. I wouldn't donate money to a charity that exercises no fundraising effort of it's own, and likewise, I don't give advice to people who lack initiative, self-investment, and in many cases self-assessment.

The advice we would give is typically obvious. Thus, it often occurs to me that many people who claim to be seeking advice are in reality - trying to measure their exposure or risk for faking it, and assuage their anxiety. They already know the better methods, but they are intent to cheat anyway.

Well said, well said.

The admins are often some of the biggest problems. There's a mid-TN group and the 2 main admins simply will not allow you to disagree with them. There was a discussion about foam parties and I chimed in about liability issues. Remembered a discussion about some guest who did a dive into the foam and broke their neck. The admins kept declaring how great foam parties were and how it was stupid, un-insured DJs who have the problem. They got quite irked with me for sounding caution.
