Could always look at Mixxx ... has 2 or 4 decks, 4 sample decks and a preview deck, time-stretching, waveforms and more. Reads iTunes and Traktor libraries (unfortunately not serato crates) ...

Lots of features for little money .. actually NO money ... Mixxx - Features

Yes, but the best of all of them (including Serato) is Mixvibes Cross DJ. Two caveats -
1) Like most (except Serato) it doesn't write everything to the files ID3 tags - a real PIA if using an external HD or SSD. Someday I will meet the goof ball responsible for XML files in a dark alley - they are not going to be a Happy Camper.

2) I think Mixvibes is allowing Cross DJ to commit suicide and join the ranks of Mixmeister, Deckadance, and the DoDo bird! I swear it is like watching an automobile accident in slow motion, where no one survives. Almost everyone is up in arms over at Mixvibe's Forum, to no avail. Unlike Serato, they never aligned themselves with someone who wears their hat sideways, or forward but with a geometrically perfect flat brim. I have zero love for today's Hip Hop/R&B, but unfortunately that's where all the money is.

just to make sure I am clear when I "preview" songs I have a song loaded in the opposite deck (as it is playing from the controller) than what is playing to the house on other deck. Then, I go through my library looking for the favorite track, loading it via one click. I can go through 10 tracks in a matter of seconds, all while having full control and previewing.

That doesn' work for you? Just want to make sure we are on the same page.

Yes, if the playing decks are unlocked, that's exactly it - I've done it many times myself.

I play a lot of music that is Salsa Dura or Hard Salsa - it comes from the era when most radio stations limited songs to 3 minutes. So, I'm half way through the song playing, I have the next song loaded on the next deck, but it is not playing. Now something happens on the floor that warrants a change in the next song. I have 90 seconds to find it by ear only. Sure I can do it. However, and this is the argument usually presented in the Serato Forums - is it the BEST next song, or, since you are rushed doing it, is it just the best song change you could find in that time? Again, I've done it both ways, and your way works (and in all fairness, Auto-Cue is a huge improvement), but a dedicated preview feature is even faster.

It looks like V2.02 is out with support for the Rane 12 & 72. Even if you don't have deep pockets, I'd install it - the Release Notes says it has a "Fixed crash on audio play back" change.

easy solution- don't lock playing decks. Maybe that's what I don't use that feature. I never lock the decks, so loading a playing deck is instant for previews and super quick when scrolling down your library. I usually can click shift, right, then down to the next track. Can also use my controller to scoll and load.

I also wouldn't want a generic preview b/c I would then not the ability to manipulate (quickly move across track, change tempo, etc).

I always lock the deck - which ONLY locks the deck while it's playing - avoiding you accidentally loading a new track while a song is in play.

yes, and I purposely don't use that feature b/c I always have both decks playing so I can preview songs instantly.

I have never accidentally loaded track to the wrong deck.
